ในการค้นคว้าหาหลักฐานเกี่ยวกับแหล่งกำเนิดการกีฬาตะกร้อในอดีตนั้น ยังไม่สามารถหาข้อสรุปได้อย่างชัดเจนว่ากีฬาตะกร้อนั้นกำเนิดจากที่ใด จากการสันนิษฐานคงจะได้หลายเหตุผลดังนี้
