ความเป็นมาของพระธาตุนาดูน
อำเภอนาดูน เป็นแหล่งอารยธรรมโบราณแห่งหนึ่งที่มีประวัติอันยาวนาน โดยบริเวณที่ตั้งของอำเภอนาดูนคือ เมืองจัมปาศรีที่เจริญรุ่งเรือนในสมัยทวารวดี เมื่อประมาณพุทธศตวรรษที่ 13-15 ซึ่งมีหลักฐานทางประวัติศาสตร์และโบราณคดีที่ค้นพบมากมาย สรุปความดังนี้
ถิ่นฐานอารยธรรมจัมปาศรีในอดีตกาล สันนิษฐานได้ว่ามีความเจริญรุ่งเรืองมา 2 ยุค คือ
1. ยุคทวารวดี ระหว่าง พ.ศ. 1000-1200
2. ยุคลพบุรี ระหว่าง พ.ศ. 1600-1800
ในราวพุทธศตวรรษที่ 13-16 ภายในตัวเมืองและนอกเมืองมีเจดีย์สมัยทวารวดีอยู่ 25 องค์ (ขณะนี้ได้ขุดค้นพบแล้ว 10 องค์) เจ้าผู้ครองเมืองนครจำปาศรี นับตั้งแต่ พระเจ้ายศวรราช ได้สร้างสถานที่สักการะบูชาในพิธีทางศาสนาพราหมณ์และพุทธ เช่น เทวาลัย ปรางค์กู่ เป็นต้น ซึ่งถือว่าได้เจริญรุ่งเรืองทั้งในด้านศาสนา วัฒนธรรม และการปกครอง จนถึงขีดสุดแล้วได้เสื่อมถอยลงจนถึงยุคอวสานในสมัยพระเจ้าฟ้างุ่มแหล่งหล้าธรณี
ค้นพบและการก่อสร้างพระธาตุนาดูน
เมื่อวันที่ 8 มิถุนายน 2522 ได้ขุดค้นพบสถูปบรรจุพระบรมสารีริกธาตุ สถูปทำด้วยทองสำริด แยกเป็น 2 ส่วน คือ
1. ตัวสถูปหรือองค์ระฆัง แบ่งออกเป็น 2 ตอน คือ ตัวสถูป เป็นส่วนที่บรรจุ พระอังคาร (ขี้เถ้า) เทียนดอกไม้ ตอนคอสถูปเป็นส่วนที่บรรจุผอบพระบรมสารีริกธาตุโดยผอบจะบรรจุพร้อมกัน 3 ชั้น คือ ผอบทองคำ จะซ้อนอยู่ในผอบเงิน ผอบเงินจะซ้อนอยู่ในผอบทองสำริด ทุกผอบมีฝาปิดมิดชิด ภายในผอบทองคำมีพระบรมสารีริกธาตุบรรจุ 1 องค์ มีลักษณะเป็นเกล็ดสีขาวขุ่นขนาดเท่าเมล็ดข้าวสารหักครึ่ง หล่อเลี้ยงไว้ด้วยน้ำมันจันทน์เมื่อเปิดออกมาจะมีกลิ่นหอมมาก
2. ส่วนยอดทำด้วยทองสำริดกลมตัน ทำเป็นปล้องไฉนลูกแก้วและปลียอด ตอนต้นทำเป็นเกลียวสามารถปิดประกอบกับส่วนตัวองค์สถูปได้พอดี
พระธาตุนาดูน จำลองแบบสถูปทองสำริดที่บรรจุพระบรมสารีริกธาตุ ซึ่งเป็นศิลปะทวารวดี ก่อสร้างเสร็จเมื่อวันที่ 24 มกราคม 2530 โดยสมเด็จพระบรมโอรสาธิราช สยามมกุฏราชกุมาร เสด็จพระราชดำเนินแทนพระองค์มาประกอบพิธีอัญเชิญพระบรมสารีริกธาตุ ขึ้นประดิษฐานไว้ในองค์พระธาตุนาดูน เมื่อวันที่ 12 พฤศจิกายน 2530
