NAKHON SI THAMMARAT — Three young children drowned at a waterfall in Ron Phibun district after they went for a swim to cool off on Sunday.

The tragedy occurred at Mae Setthi Waterfall at Moo 7 village in tambon Ron Phibun. It followed the deaths of four girls aged 9 and 10 years old who drowned in a pond at a paddy field in Nakhon Ratchasima on Friday. 

The bodies of the three children, a boy and two girls who were siblings, were retrieved from the water by local residents by the time police and paramedics arrived. The boy was identified as Thitisak Booblum, 7, and sisters Sawarak Pakdipan, 8, and Kantisa Pakdipan, 5. 

Pol Lt Niyom Songtip, a duty officer at Ron Phibun police station, said the children lived near the waterfall and went there without telling their parents. It was believed one of the youngsters may have fallen into the water and the two others tried to help. 

Pol Lt Niyom quoted Pattananan, 15, the girls’ eldest sister, as saying that the siblings asked for some money from their parents to buy snacks and went out with Thitisak on bicycles and did not return after two hours. Their mother, Boonchuay, 35, then asked Pattananan to search for her sisters. Pattananan alerted her family and neighbours after she spotted the children’s  bicycles at the waterfall but saw no sign of them.

Mrs Boonchuay said her daughters had never been to swim at the waterfall before, but she believed the extreme hot weather may have encouraged them to go there to cool off without telling her. She said she did not want to see other parents endure what she was going through and urged them to watch their young children carefully when near or in the water.
