ความสำคัญ

"ปอยส่างลอง" เป็นงานประเพณีบวชลูกแก้วของไทยใหญ่ เป็นการบรรพชาสามเณรให้สืบทอดพระพุทธศาสนา และเพื่อเรียนรู้พระธรรมคำสั่งสอนของพระพุทธเจ้า โดยมีความเชื่อว่า ถ้าได้บวชให้ลูกของตนเป็นสามเณรจะได้อานิสงฆ์ ๘ กัลป์ บวชลูกคนอื่นเป็นสามเณรได้อานิสงฆ์ ๔ กัลป์ และหากได้อุปสมบทลูกของตนเป็นพระภิกษุสงฆ์ จะได้อานิสงฆ์ ๑๒ กัลป์ และได้อุปสมบทลูกคนอื่นจะได้อานิสงฆ์ ๘ กัลป์ และเพื่อเป็นการสืบทอดประเพณีที่มีมาดั้งเดิม

พิธีกรรม

มี ๒ วิธีคือ แบบที่เรียกว่า ข่ามดิบ และแบบที่เรียกว่า ส่างลอง
๑. แบบข่ามดิบเป็นวิธีการแบบง่าย ๆ คือ พ่อแม่จะนำเด็กไปโกนผมที่วัดหรือที่บ้าน เสร็จแล้วนุ่งขาวห่มขาว เตรียมเครื่องไทยทานอัฐบริขารไปทำพิธีบรรพชาเป็นสามเณรที่วัด พระสงฆ์ประกอบพิธีให้ก็เป็นสามเณร
๒. แบบส่างลอง เป็นวิธีที่จัดงานกันใหญ่โตนิยมกันมากแบ่งวันจัดงานเป็น ๓ วัน คือ
วันแรก เรียกว่า วันรับส่างลองในตอนเช้านำเด็กที่โกนหัวแล้วไปแต่งชุดส่างลอง คล้ายเจ้าชายไทยใหญ่รับศีล นำส่างลองแห่ขอขมาศาลเจ้าประจำหมู่บ้าน ขอขมาพระสงฆ์ที่วัดและญาติผู้ใหญ่ ผู้ที่เคารพรักใคร่ชอบพอ ตลอดทั้งวันและนำส่างลองกลับไปรับประทานอาหารพักผ่อนที่บ้านเจ้าภาพ
วันที่สอง เป็นวันแห่เครื่องไทยทานทำในตอบเช้ามีขบวนแห่เครื่องไทยทานและส่างลองไปที่วัด เลี้ยงอาหารผู้มาร่วมขบวนแห่ และมีการทำขวัญส่างลอง เลี้ยงอาหารมื้อพิเศษมีอาหาร ๑๒ อย่าง แก่ส่างลองด้วย
วันที่สาม เป็นวันบรรพชาสามเณร ตอนบ่ายแก่แห่ส่างลองไปที่วัดและทำพิธีบรรพชา และอาจมีจุดบั้งไฟเป็นการเฉลิมฉลองด้วย
