       นีล อาร์มสตรองเกิดที่รัฐโอไฮโอ จบการศึกษาจาก มหาวิทยาลัยเซาเทิร์นแคลิฟอร์เนีย และเป็นนักบินทดสอบให้กับองค์การนาซามาก่อน เขาได้รับคัดเลือกเป็นนักบินอวกาศเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2505 (ค.ศ. 1962) และปฏิบัติภารกิจหลายภารกิจในโครงการเจมินีและโครงการอะพอลโล
