ประวัติ ศิลาจารึกหลักนี้ เดิมอยู่ที่วัดจำปา ตำบลทุ่ง อำเภอไชยา จังหวัดสุราษฎร์ธานี นายเอื้อน สุรทิน ปลัดอำเภอไชยา ได้นำศิลาจารึกนี้ไปเก็บรักษาไว้ที่วัดสมุหนิมิต นายวิคเตอร์ เคเนดี้ ได้ถ่ายภาพและทำสำเนาจารึกมอบให้แก่กองโบราณคดี กรมศิลปากร เมื่อวันที่ ๔ ธันวาคม พ.ศ. ๒๕๑๒ ต่อมา ผู้อำนวยการหอสมุดแห่งชาติ พระนคร พร้อมทั้งคณะได้เดินทางไปราชการที่ภาคใต้จึงส่งเจ้าหน้าที่ไปทำสำเนาจารึกอีกครั้ง จึงมีการอ่านและตีพิมพ์ลงใน วารสารศิลปากร ปีที่ ๑๕ ฉบับที่ ๑ (พฤษภาคม ๒๕๑๔) โดยเรียกว่า “ศิลาจารึกอักษรขอม ภาษาไทย สมัยกรุงธนบุรี” และ “ศิลาจารึกวัดจำปา” (ในที่นี้ใช้ชื่อตามกองหอสมุดแห่งชาติ คือ “จารึกวัดสมุหนิมิต” ซึ่งเรียกตามที่อยู่ปัจจุบันของจารึก และหลีกเลี่ยงการซ้ำกับ จารึกวัดจำปา สมัยอยุธยา) การกำหนดอายุ กำหนดอายุจากศักราชที่ปรากฏในจารึก ว่า “พระพุทธศักราชได้ ๒๓๑๙ พระวัสสา“
