เป็นเสียงที่เกิดจากกระแสลมจากปอด เคลื่อนผ่านไปยังช่องเส้นเสียง กระแสลมจะถูกแปรโดยการำงานองเส้นเสียง โดยทั่วไปแล้วเสียงสระจะเป็นเสียงก้อง (voiced)
ลิ้นที่ใช้ในการออกเสียง แบ่งได้ 3 ส่วน คือ
1.front of the tongue (ตรงข้ามเพดานแข็ง)
2.central of the tongue (อยู่ตรงข้ามกับส่วนต่อระหว่างเพดานแข็งกับเพดานอ่อน)
3.back of the tongue (อยู่ตรงข้ามกับเพดานอ่อน)
