กระทรวงมหาดไทยได้มีประกาศลงวันที่ 26 สิงหาคม พ.ศ.2545 ประกาศเปิดจุดผ่านแดน ถาวรช่องจอม-โอเสม็ด อำเภอกาบเชิง จังหวัดสุรินทร์ ตรงข้ามกับโอเสม็ด อำเภอสำโรง จังหวัดโอดาร์เมียเจย ของประเทศกัมพูชา ตั้งแต่วันที่ 1 กันยายน พ.ศ. 2545 เป็นต้นไป ระหว่างเวลา 07.00 - 17.00 น. ของทุกวัน ต่อมาได้มีประกาศกระทรวงมหาดไทย ลงวันที่ 29 ตุลาคม พ.ศ. 2546 ขยายเวลา เปิดจุดผ่านแดนถาวรจากเวลาเดิมเป็น 07.00 -20.00 น. ตั้งแต่วันที่ 11 พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ.2546 เป็นต้นไป (ด่านศุลกากรช่องจอม, 2555: 2)
ตลาดการค้าชายแดนช่องจอมจะเปิดให้บริการแก่นักท่องเที่ยวทั้งไทยและกมพูชาทุกๆวันและมีตลาดนัดสินค้าในวันเสาร์ ซึ่งจะเป็นตลาดนัดพวกของสด เนื้อสัตว์และผัดสดรวมทั้งเปิดท้ายขายเสื้อผ้ราคาถูกในฝั่งตลาด ซึ่งจะมีแผงเสื้อผ้าราคาถูกมาขายมากมายและมีลักษณะการค้าที่คึกคักอย่างมาก ขณะที่วันอื่นๆนั้นเป็นการขายการสินค้าอุปโภคบริโภคตามปกติทั้งนี้สินค้าที่มีจำหน่ายในบริเวณ ตลาดการค้าชายแดนมีแหล่งที่มาจากจังหวัดต่างๆ เช่นกระเทียมจากจังหวัดศรีสะเกษ ผลไม้จากจังหวัดระยองและจันทบุรี การซื้อขายแลกเปลี่ยนมีความคึกคักอย่างมากในช่วงเวลาเช้าประมาณ 07.00 - 10.00 น.นอกจากนี้พื้นที่ตลาดการค้าชายแดนช่องจอม ยังเป็นตลาดสินค้าขายปลีกจำหน่ายให้ คนในพื้นที่ นักท่องเที่ยวชาวไทยและชาวกัมพูชาที่ข้ามพรมแดนเพื่อซื้อสินค้าอุปโภคบริโภคซึ่งมีจำหน่ายทุกๆวันรวมทั้งเป็นแหล่งตลาดขายส่งสินค้าอุปโภคบริโภคต่อการนำเข้าของประเทศกัมพูชา และมีลักษณะสินค้าที่จำหน่ายในตลาดช่องจอมมี2 ลักษณะดังนี้(วัชรินทร์ยงศิริ, 2547: 66) (1) สินค้าอุปโภค ได้แก่ สบู่ ผงซักฟอก ยาสีฟัน เครื่องสำอาง เสื้อผ้า วัสดุอุปกรณ์ก่อสร้าง ปูนซีเมนต์และเครื่องใช้ไฟฟ้า (2) สินค้าบริโภค ได้แก่ ข้าวสาร พืชผักผลไม้ ขนม เครื่องดื่มน้ำอัดลม น้ำดื่ม น้ำตาลทราย และเครื่องดื่มบำรุงกาลัง ส่วนสินค้าจากพ่อค้าแม่ค้าชาวกมพูชาที่นำเข้ามาขายในบริเวณตลาดช่องจอมได้แก่ ไม้สำหรับทำเป็นค้าจอบ ด้ามเสียม ครกไม้ เขียง ไม้แกะสลัก เสื่อหวาย ยาสมุนไพร ของป่า ดอกกล้วยไม้ป่า ใบผักหวานป่า ต้นกล้วยป่า หัวมัน เครื่องเงิน เหรียญและธนบัตรเก่า วัตถุโบราณ เครื่องประดับ เครื่องสำอาง ยาจากจีน ผ้าห่มเก่าใช้แล้ว จักรยานมือสองและสินค้าลอกเลียนแบบ
