งานวิจัยที่เกี่ยวข้องกับการศึกษาเสียงสระภาษาอังกฤษที่มักออกเสียงผิด ได้แก่
กมลเนตร เอียดเกิด (2552) ได้ทำการวิเคราะห์ข้อผิดในการออกเสียงพยัญชนะภาษาอังกฤษของนักศึกษา สาขาวิชาภาษาอังกฤษเพื่อการสื่อสารสากล มหาวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยีราชมงคลศรีวิชัย ข้อมูลในการวิจัยนี้ได้จากการอ่านออกเสียง จำนวน 66 คำ ของนักศึกษาจำนวน 48 คนโดยนำผลมาวิเคราะห์ทางสถิติ และใช้ค่าความถี่และค่าร้อยละ พบว่านักศึกษามีปัญหาในการออกเสียงภาษาอังกฤษทั้ง เสียงพยัญชนะ เสียงสระ เสียงควบกล้ำ และการขึ้นลงของเสียงในประโยค

เบญจพร มีพร้อม จันคล้าย (2557) ได้ศึกษาคำศัพท์ภาษาอังกฤษที่มักออกเสียงผิดในการเรียนสนทนาภาษาอังกฤษ ระดับปริญญาตรี มหาวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยีราชมงคลธัญบุรี ผลการวิจัยพบว่า จากการทดสอบการออกเสียงด้วยคำศัพท์ 100 คำ ไม่มีนักศึกษาคนใดเลยที่ออกเสียงได้ถูกต้องหมดทุกคำ และเสียงสระที่นักศึกษามักมีปัญหาในการออกเสียงมากที่สุด ได้แก่ /ə/, /æ/, /e/, /ɪ/, /i/, /ɒ/ ซึ่งเป็นสระเสียงเดียว และเสียงสระประสม ได้แก่ /eɪ/, /aɪ/, /jʊ/, /je/, /ju:/, /aʊ/, /ɪə/, /ər/ เป็นต้น
ลักษณารีย์ ศุภรัชต์เศรณี (2554) ได้ทำการวิเคราะห์ข้อผิดพลาดในการออกเสียงภาษาอังกฤษของนักเรียนไทย ที่เรียนแผนการเรียนภาษาญี่ปุ่น การวิจัยครั้งนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาข้อผิดพลาดในการออกเสียงภาษาอังกฤษของนักศึกษาจำนวน 39 คน พบว่า นักเรียนนักศึกษาไทยมีข้อผิดพลาดในการออกเสียงอยู่ในระดับที่วิกฤตมาก ประมาณร้อยละ 18.12 พบข้อผิดพลาดในการออกเสียงสระเดียว 27.60 มีข้อผิดพลาดในการออกเสียงสระประสม และที่มีปัญหามากที่สุด คือ ข้อผิดพลาดในการออกเสียงสระประสมสามเสียง ประมาณร้อยละ 97.22
ถีรพิทย์ ถาพรผาด (2538) ได้การศึกษาปัญหาการออกเสียงภาษาอังกฤษของนักเรียนมัธยมศึกษาปี่ที่ 3 ในชุมชนที่พูดภาษาเขมร จังหวัดสุรินทร์ งานวิจัยนี้เป็นการศึกษาเสียงสระและพยัญชนะที่นักเรียนมักออกเสียงผิด และในการวิจัยครั้งนี้พบว่า เสียงสระเดี่ยวที่นักเรียนมักออกเสียงผิด ที่ยังเป็นปัญหาอยู่ในระดับมากที่สุดคือ เสียง /ə/ ส่วนเสียงสระเดี่ยวอื่นๆ เป็นปัญหาอยู่ในระดับน้อยมาก และการออกเสียงสระประสมที่ยังเป็นปัญหาอยู่ในระดับปานกลางคือ เสียง /ʊə/ ส่วนเสียงสระประสมอื่นๆ ไม่ค่อยจะมีปัญหาเท่าไร
จากการทบทวนวรรณกรรมที่เกี่ยวข้อง จะเห็นได้ว่า การออกเสียงของนักศึกษายังคงเป็นปัญหาหนึ่งในการสื่อสารภาษาอังกฤษ ฉะนั้นการศึกษาข้อผิดพลาดในการออกเสียงสระภาษาอังกฤษของนักศึกษาจึงเป็นสิ่งที่จำเป็น เพื่อให้ทราบถึงปัญหาหรือข้อผิดพลาดใดที่ควรได้รับการแก้ไขและการพัฒนาต่อไป
