                บุญข้าวจี่ เป็นงานบุญประเพณีของชาวอีสาน ที่กระทำกันในเดือนสาม จนเรียกว่า บุญเดือนสาม บุญข้าวจี่เป็นบุญประเพณีสำคัญที่มีกำหนดอยู่ในฮีตสิบสอง ดังรู้จักกันทั่วไปว่า เดือนสามคล้อยจั่วหัวปั้นข้าวจี่ เดือนสี่คล้อยจัวน้อยเทศน์มะที (มัทรี)
 
            บุญข้าวจี่นิยมทำกันในราวกลางเดือนหรือปลายเดือนสาม  คือ  ภายหลังการทำบุญวันมาฆบูชา  (เดือนสาม ขึ้น ๑๔ ค่ำ) แล้ว ส่วนใหญ่จะกำหนดวันแรม ๑๓ ค่ำ และ ๑๔ ค่ำ เดือนสาม บุญข้าวจี่เป็นกิจกรรมร่วมของชุมชนหลายหมู่บ้าน นั่นคือ ชาวอีสานบางหมู่บ้านเรียกงานบุญนี้ว่า บุญคุ้ม จะทำกันเป็นคุ้ม ๆ หรือ บางหมู่บ้านก็จะทำกันที่วัดประจำหมู่บ้าน ล้วนแล้วแต่เป็น บุญข้าวจี่ หรือบุญเดือนสามนั่นเอง ชาวบ้านที่เป็นเจ้าภาพก็จะบอกบุญไปยังหมู่บ้านใกล้เคียงให้มาร่วมกันทำบุญ
 
                ข้าวจี่ คือ ข้าวเหนียวนึ่งให้สุกแล้วนำมาปั้นเป็นก้อนทาเกลือเคล้าให้ทั่ว เอาไม้เสียบย่างไฟเหมือนไก่ย่าง เมื่อข้าวสุกเกรียมแล้วก็เอาไข่ซึ่งตีไว้แล้วทาแล้วย่างซ้ำอีกกลายเป็นไข่เคลือบข้าวเหนียว เสร็จแล้วถอดไม้ออกแล้วเอาน้ำอ้อยหรือน้ำตาลที่เป็นก้อนยัดใส่แทนกลายเป็นข้าวเหนียวยัดไส้ แล้วถวายพระเณรฉันตอนเช้า
 
                ส่วนมากชาวบ้านจะรีบทำแต่เช้ามืด พอสว่างก็ลงศาลาการเปรียญ (ชาวบ้านเรียกหัวแจก) นิมนต์พระเณรสวดแล้วฉัน เป็นทั้งงานบุญและงานรื่นเริงประจำแต่ละหมู่บ้าน เพราะได้ทำข้าวจี่ไปถวายพระหลังจากพระฉันแล้วก็เลี้ยงกันเองสนุกสนาน มีคำพังเพยอีสานว่า
 
"เดือนสามค้อยเจ้าหัวคอยปั้นเข้าจี่ เข้าจี่บ่ใส่น้ำอ้อยจัวน้อยเช็ดน้ำตา"
 
                เดือนนี้ชาวนาส่วนใหญ่ถือกันตั้งแต่โบราณมาว่าเป็นเดือนสู่ขวัญข้าว คือมีการถวายข้าวเปลือกพระและนิยมทำบุญบ้าน สวดมนต์เสร็จพิธีสงฆ์ แล้วก็สู่ขวัญข้าวตามธรรมเนียมพราหมณ์ บางบ้านก็ทำเล็กน้อยพอเป็นพิธี คือเอาข้าวไปถวายสงฆ์แล้วทำพิธีตุ้มปากเล้าเล็กน้อยเป็นการบูชาคุณของข้าวในเล้าหรือยุ้ง
 
"เถิงเมื่อเดือนสามได้จงพากันทำเข้าจี่ ไปถวายสงฆเจ้าเอาแท้หมู่บุญ"
 
ประวัติความเป็นมาประเพณีบุญข้าวจี่
                มูลเหตุที่ทำบุญข้าวจี่ในเดือนสาม เนื่องจากเป็นเวลาที่ชาวนาได้มีการทำนาเสร็จสิ้น  ชาวนาได้ข้าวขึ้นยุ้งใหม่จึงอยากร่วมกันทำบุญข้าวจี่ถวายแก่พระสงฆ์  สำหรับมูลเหตุดั้งเดิมที่มีการทำบุญข้าวจี่ มีเรื่องเล่ากันตามความเชื่อว่า  ในสมัยพุทธกาล นางปุณณะทาสี  ได้ทำขนมแป้งจี่ถวายแด่พระสัมมาสัมพุทธเจ้าและพระอานนท์เถระ  ครั้นถวายแล้วนางคิดว่าพระองค์คงไม่เสวยและอาจเอาทิ้งให้สุนัขหรือกากิน เพราะ อาหารที่นางถวายไม่ประณีตน่ารับประทาน
 
                เมื่อพระพุทธเจ้าทรงทราบภาวะจิตของนางปุณณะทาสี  จึงรับสั่งให้พระอานน์ปูลาดอาสนะแล้วทรงประทับนั่งฉันท์  ณ  ที่นางถวายนั้น เป็นผลให้นางเกิดปีติยินดีเป็นอย่างยิ่งและเมื่อนางได้ฟังพระธรรมเทศนาที่พระพุทธเจ้าทรงแสดงก็บรรลุโสดาบันปัตติผลด้วยอานิงสงฆ์ที่ถวายขนมแป้งจี่  ชาวอีสานจึงเชื่อในอานิสงส์ของการทานดังกล่าวจึงพากันทำข้าวจี่ถวายทานแด่พระสงฆ์สืบต่อมา
