  รัฐบาลไทยกำหนดให้วันที่ 18 สิงหาคม เป็นวันวิทยาศาสตร์แห่งชาติ เนื่องจากวันที่ 18 สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2411 พระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว ได้เสด็จพระราชดำเนินชลมารคและสถลมารค ทอดพระเนตรสุริยุปราคาเต็มดวง ที่ทรงคำนวณพยากรณ์ไว้ล่วงหน้า 2 ปี ว่าจะเกิดในวันอังคาร ขึ้น 1 ค่ำ เดือน 10 ปีมะโรง สัมฤทธิศก จุลศักราช 1230 โดยจะเห็นหมดดวงและชัดเจนที่สุด คือ ที่หมู่บ้านหัววาฬ ตำบลหว้ากอ อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดประจวบคีรีขันธ์ ตั้งแต่บริเวณ เกาะจาน ขึ้นไปถึง ปราณบุรี และลงไปถึง จังหวัดชุมพร จึงโปรดฯ ให้เจ้าพระยาศรีสุริยวงศ์ (ช่วง บุนนาค) ไปสร้างค่ายหลวงและพลับพลาที่ประทับ มีคณะนักดาราศาสตร์จากประเทศฝรั่งเศส และเซอร์แฮรี ออด เจ้าเมืองสิงคโปร์เดินทางมาเข้าเฝ้าฯ และร่วมในการสังเกตการณ์ และต่อมาได้มีการสร้าง "อุทยานวิทยาศาสตร์" ที่ อำเภอบ้านหว้ากอ

       ทั้งนี้ สมาคมวิทยาศาสตร์แห่งประเทศไทยในพระบรมราชูปถัมภ์ โดยเฉพาะทางด้านดาราศาสตร์ มีแนวคิดว่าน่าจะถือเอาวันที่ 18 สิงหาคมเป็นวันวิทยาศาสตร์ไทย ต่อมาวันที่ 14 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2525 คณะรัฐมนตรีได้มีมติเทิดพระเกียรติพระบาทสมเด็จพระจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัวเป็น "พระบิดาแห่งวิทยาศาสตร์ไทย" พร้อมทั้งกำหนดให้วันที่ 18 สิงหาคม เป็น "วันวิทยาศาสตร์แห่งชาติ" และเมื่อวันที่ 18 สิงหาคม พ.ศ. 2511 ได้มีการจัดงานขึ้นเนื่องในโอกาสครบรอบ 100 ปีของเหตุการณ์ที่เกิดขึ้
