สาเหตุหลักของปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมมีอยู่ 2 ประการด้วยกัน คือ

1. การเพิ่มของประชากร
ความต้องการบริโภคทรัพยากรมากขึ้นทุกทางไม่ว่าจะเป็นเรื่องอาหาร ที่อยู่อาศัย พลังงาน

2. การขยายตัวทางเศรษฐกิจ มีการบริโภคทรัพยากรจนเกินกว่าความจำเป็น
