การศึกษาครั้งนี้ผู้วิจัยศึกษาวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ สิ่งที่สำคัญที่สุดในการทำการศึกษามีความเชื่อถือ ผู้วิจัยสนใจจะศึกษาบทบาทผู้พิการที่มีส่วนพัฒนาสังคม ผู้วิจัยเล่งเห็นความสำคัญของการทำให้คนในสังคมส่วนใหญ่เข้าใจถึงสถานภาพ บทบาทของผู้พิการในสังคมไทย จึงมีแนวคิดในการศึกษาบทบาทผู้พิการที่มีส่วนพัฒนาสังคม อันนำไปสู่การให้ความช่วยเหลือสนับสนุนผู้พิการประเภทต่าง ๆ ได้อย่างถูกต้อง เพื่อยกระดับคุณภาพชีวิตของคนพิการให้ได้มาตรฐานตามแบบสากล “ผู้พิการ” เป็นประชากรส่วนหนึ่งซึ่งพบเห็นได้ในสังคม โดยพนานุกรมฉบับราชบัณฑิตยสถาน พ.ศ. 2542 ได้ให้ความหมายของคนพิการเอาไว้ว่า “การเสียอวัยวะหรือการเสียไปจากสภาพเดิม”ในอดีตการมีคนพิการอยู่ในสังคมร่วมกับคนปกติ ถือเป็นเรื่องที่น่าเวทนา ทำให้คนพิการถูกละเลยผลักไสจากสังคม ดังจะเห็นได้จากสังคมอเมริกาก่อนการเข้าร่วมสงครามโลกครั้งที่ 2 คนในสังคมมองว่าคนพิการไม่สามารถเลี้ยงชีพตนเองได้ และยังชีพได้ด้วยการทำบุญทำทานจากผู้อื่น คนพิการจึงถูกผลักไสให้ไปอยู่ในสถานสงเคราะห์ กระทั่งการเข้าร่วมสงครามทำให้ทหารอเมริกาต้องกลายเป็นคนพิการจำนวนมาก รัฐบาลจึงเปิดช่องทางรองรับคนพิการเหล่านั้นประกอบกับการเรียนกสิทธิของคนพิการให้สังคมอเมริกาและแพร่ขยายไปยังสังคมโลก ส่งผลให้รัฐบาลแต่ละประเทศตระหนักถึงสิทธิของคนพิการมากขึ้น การช่วยเหลือคนพิการจึงพัฒนาไปสู่การสร้างสรรค์ต่อคนพิการทางด้านร่างกาย จิตใจ สติปัญญา เพื่อให้คนพิการช่วยเหลือตนเองได้และมีส่วนร่วมทางสังคม ดังจะเห็นได้จากความมุ่งประสงค์ในอนุสัญญาว่าด้วยสิทธิของคนพิการ
