ความหมายสิ่งแวดล้อม หมายถึง สิ่งต่าง ๆ ที่มีลักษณะทางกายภาพและชีวภาพที่อยู่รอบตัวมนุษย์ ซึ่งเกิดขึ้นโดยธรรมชาติและสิ่งที่มนุษย์ได้ทำขึ้น

ประเภทของสิ่งแวดล้อม แบ่งออกเป็น 2 ประเภท
1. สิ่งแวดล้อมทางธรรมชาติ (Natural environment) สิ่งที่เกิดขึ้นเองตามธรรมชาติ เช่น ป่าไม้ สัตว์ป่า อากาศ ดิน น้ำ มนุษย์ แบ่งออกเป็น 2 ประเภทย่อย
- สิ่งที่มีชีวิต (Biotic Environment) เช่น พืช สัตว์ มนุษย์
- สิ่งที่ไม่มีชีวิต (Abiotic Environment) เช่น แร่ธาตุ อากาศ เสียง

2. สิ่งแวดล้อมที่มนุษย์สร้างขึ้น (Man-Made Environment) ได้จากทรัพยากรดั้งเดิม แล้วมนุษย์เป็นผู้ดัดแปลงเช่น ถนน บ้านเมือง
