ประเพณียี่เป็งหรือเทศกาลลอยกระทงล้านนา เป็นประเพณีเก่าแก่ที่ปฏิบัติสืบทอดกันมาแต่โบราณ โดยในช่วงเวลายี่เป็งนี้จะมีการเฉลิมฉลองด้วยกัน 3 วัน และจะมีการประดับตกแต่งบ้านและวัดด้วยโคมแขวน พร้อมทั้งมีการลอยโคมในแม่น้ำ รวมไปถึงการลอยโคมยี่เป็งขึ้นสู่ท้องฟ้า ด้วยความเชื่อที่ว่าจะปลดปล่อยทุกข์ภัยและสิ่งชั่วร้ายให้พ้นไป โดยงานประเพณียี่เป็งนี้จะจัดเป็นประจำทุกปีในบริเวณเขตเทศบาลนครเชียงใหม่ ภายในงานจะมีการแห่โคม ขบวนแห่กระทง และการแสดงศิลปวัฒนธรรมล้านนา
