เดิมจัดแสดงอยู่ที่ โรงเก็บเครื่องบินด้านทิศตะวันตกของสนามบินดอนเมือง แต่ยังไม่ได้เปิดให้ประชาชนทั่วไปเข้าชม เมื่อรวบรวมพัสดุพิพิธภัณฑ์ได้มากขึ้นจึงทำพิธีเปิดเป็นทางการเมื่อ ๒๗ มีนาคม ๒๕๐๒ ต่อมากองทัพอากาศ ได้จัดสร้างอาคารพิพิธภัณฑ์ขึ้นใหม่ เมื่อ ๒๖ มีนาคม ๒๕๑๑ แล้วเสร็จเมื่อ ๑๕ พฤศจิกายน ๒๕๑๑ และได้เปิดให้ประชาชนทั่วไปเข้าชม เมื่อ ๒๔ มกราคม ๒๕๑๒เป็นต้นมา
