ห้องสมุดในสหรัฐอเมริกาเมื่อวันที่ 1

ห้องสมุดในสหรัฐอเมริกา

เมื่อวันที่ 12-26 ตุลาคม 2550 ที่ผ่านมา ข้าพเจ้าร่วมกับคณะผู้บริหารห้องสมุดจากมหาวิทยาลัยอีก 6 แห่ง ได้มีโอกาสเดินทางไปดูงานห้องสมุด ณ รัฐ New York รัฐ Ohio และรัฐ Washington DC ประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา ห้องสมุดที่ได้เยี่ยมชมมีทั้งหมด 11 แห่ง เป็นห้องสมุดมหาวิทยาลัย 6 แห่ง ห้องสมุดประชาชน 3 แห่ง และ องค์กรที่ให้บริการทางด้านสารสนเทศอีก 2 แห่ง ซึ่งในที่นี่จะขอกล่าวถึงเฉพาะห้องสมุดมหาวิทยาลัยและห้องสมุดประชาชนเท่านั้น

ห้องสมุดมหาวิทยาลัยที่ได้ไปเยี่ยมชมทั้ง 6 แห่งนั้น ทั้งหมดอยู่ในรัฐ Ohio ได้แก่

การจัดให้บริการสื่อ/อุปกรณ์อิเล็กทรอนิกส์เพื่อส่งเสริมการศึกษา ค้นคว้าและการเรียนรู้ นับเป็นอีกสิ่งหนึ่งที่ห้องสมุดมหาวิทยาลัยต่างจัดหามาให้กับผู้ใช้ของตน ไม่ว่าจะเป็นคอมพิวเตอร์ อินเทอร์เน็ต เครื่องสแกนเนอร์ เครื่องพิมพ์ผล สื่อโสตทัศนวัสดุต่างๆ ที่นอกจากจะมีบริการให้ใช้ภายในห้องสมุดแล้ว บางแห่งยังมีบริการให้ยืมออกไปใช้ภายนอกด้วย โดยเฉพาะที่ Libraries and Media Services ของ Kent University ที่เน้นสภาพแวดล้อมที่ผู้เรียนเป็นศูนย์กลาง ซึ่งนอกจากจะมีห้องเรียนไว้ให้บริการเหมือนห้องสมุดอื่นๆ แล้ว ยังเน้นการจัดให้บริการสื่อโสตทัศน์ต่างๆ เพื่อใช้ในการนำเสนอในการเรียนการสอนในห้องเรียนทั้งสำหรับอาจารย์ผู้สอนและนักศึกษาอีกด้วย ที่ Science and Engineering Library ของ The Ohio State University ก็มีห้อง Digital Union ที่จัดไว้สำหรับการสอน/แนะนำวิธีการสร้างสื่อการเรียนการสอนต่างๆ ให้น่าสนใจยิ่งขึ้นด้วยเทคโนโลยีทางคอมพิวเตอร์

จากการดูงานครั้งนี้ ได้พบว่า ห้องสมุดแต่ละแห่งเน้นความร่วมมือในการแบ่งปันทรัพยากร ไม่ว่าจะเป็นความร่วมมือกันของห้องสมุดสาขาภายในมหาวิทยาลัยเอง ความร่วมมือในระดับกลุ่มมหาวิทยาลัย (Consort) ในระดับรัฐ (OhioLINK) รวมทั้งในระดับโลก (OCLC) ทั้งนี้เพื่อการจัดให้บริการ
ทรัพยากรสารสนเทศที่รวดเร็วและตรงกับความต้องการของผู้ใช้ให้ได้มากที่สุดนั่นเอง นอกจากนี้ ยังเน้นการเสริมสร้างบรรยากาศการอ่านและการเรียนรู้ ด้วยการจัดมุม/นิทรรศการหนังสือที่น่าสนใจและน่าดึงดูด มุมที่นั่งในลักษณะต่างๆ สำหรับอ่านหนังสือ ภาพและแผ่นโปสเตอร์ส่งเสริมการอ่านที่ตกแต่งตามผนังและพื้นที่ว่าง รวมทั้งจัดให้บริการเครื่องมือและสิ่งอำนวยความสะดวกต่างๆ สำหรับการเรียนรู้ การศึกษาค้นคว้าไว้อย่างครบครัน ไม่ว่าจะเป็นเครื่องคอมพิวเตอร์ทั้งที่เป็นเครื่องคอมพิวเตอร์ส่วนบุคคล และโน้ตบุ๊ค เครื่องสแกน เครื่องพิมพ์ผล กล้องดิจิทัล และสื่ออิเล็กทรอนิกส์อื่นๆ
