หลังจากที่กีฬาแฮนด์บอลนิยมเล่นกันอย่างแพร่หลายไปทั่วโลกแล้ว ประเทศไทยก็เริ่มนำเอากีฬาแฮนด์บอลเข้ามาเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2482 (ค.ศ. 1939) โดย อาจารย์กอง วิสุทธารมย์ อดีตอธิบดีกรมพลศึกษาในขณะนั้น ซึ่งในตอนนั้นยังกติกาแฮนด์บอลยังต้องมีผู้เล่นทีมละ 11 คน จึงทำให้ไม่สะดวก และไม่เป็นที่นิยมในไทยมากนัก

จนกระทั่งปี พ.ศ. 2500 (ค.ศ. 1957) อาจารย์ชนิต คงมนต์ ได้บรรจุกีฬาแฮนด์บอลเข้าสอนในโรงเรียนฝึกหัดครูพลานามัย และวิทยาลัยพลศึกษาอื่น ๆ ก่อนที่จะแพร่หลายไปยังโรงเรียนต่าง ๆ จนกลายเป็นหลักสูตรบังคับของชั้นมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลายเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2518 (ค.ศ. 1975) และใช้กติกาการแข่งขันแบบสากลเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2524 (ค.ศ. 1981) และเป็นที่นิยมในประเทศไทยในที่สุด
