โครงการบำบัดน้ำเสียบึงมักกะสันอันเนื่องมาจากพระราชดำริ พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัว ได้พระราชทานพระราชดำริ เมื่อวันที่ 15 เมษายน และวันที่ 20 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2528 ให้หน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องร่วมปรับปรุงบึงมักกะสัน เพื่อช่วยระบายน้ำและบรรเทาสภาพน้ำเสียในคลองสามเสน โดยใช้รูปแบบ “เครื่องกรองน้ำธรรมชาติ” ความตอนหนึ่งว่า “...บึงมักกะสันนี้ ทำโครงการที่เรียกว่าแบบคนจน โดยใช้หลักว่าผักตบชวาที่มีอยู่ทั่วไปนั้น เป็นพืชดูดความโสโครกออกมาแล้วก็ทำให้น้ำสะอาดขึ้นได้ เป็นเครื่องกรองธรรมชาติใช้พลังงานแสงอาทิตย์และธรรมชาติของการเติบโตของพืช...”

ความเป็นมาของโครงการ :
