สมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดา ฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารีทรงเป็นนักการศึกษา โปรดที่จะศึกษาหาความรู้ต่าง ๆ และทรงมุ่งมั่นอุตสาหะในการศึกษาสิ่งที่สนพระทัยอย่างจริงจัง ความใฝ่พระทัยในการศึกษามีมาตั้งแต่ครั้งยังทรงพระเยาว์ ดังจะเห็นได้จากพระราชนิพนธ์ข้อสอบวิชาเรียงความ ชั้นมัธยมศึกษาปีที่ ๓ เรื่อง "ประเทศทั้งหลายย่อมเจริญได้ด้วยการศึกษา" ความตอนหนึ่งว่า
"... กล่าวกันว่า "การศึกษาทำคนให้เป็นคน" เนื่องจากการศึกษานี้ไม่ได้หมายความเพียงแค่ท่องจำสิ่งต่าง ๆ ที่ทางโรงเรียนและกระทรวงศึกษาธิการกำหนดให้เรียน แต่มีความหมายกว้างออกไปถึงการค้นคว้าด้วยตนเอง ใช้สมองคิด วิเคราะห์แยกแยะถึงเหตุผลของสิ่งต่าง ๆ ในโลกด้วย ยิ่งบุคคลเรียนรู้เข้าใจสิ่งต่าง ๆ มากขึ้นเท่าไร บุคคลนั้นยิ่งเป็นคนที่เชี่ยวชาญเฉลียวฉลาดทั้งในทางโลกและทางธรรม เป็นกำลังของบ้านเมือง ทำให้บ้านเมืองเป็นปรกติสุข ประเทศอื่น ๆ ไม่อาจจะเอารัดเอาเปรียบได้ ..."

ทรงเห็นความสำคัญของครอบครัวที่เป็นจุดเริ่มแรกของการเรียนรู้ และหล่อหลอมจิตสำนึกของคนตั้งแต่วัยเยาว์ พระราชดำริดังกล่าวอยู่ในปาฐกถาเรื่อง "การศึกษาของผู้ด้อยโอกาส" ที่ทรงบรรยายเมื่อวันที่ ๑๒ พฤศจิกายน ๒๕๔๔ ความตอนหนึ่งว่า
"... การศึกษาเบื้องต้นที่เราพูดถึงคือ การศึกษาในครอบครัว ซึ่งเป็นช่วงสร้างบุคลิกสร้างชีวิต โดยหลัก ๆ แล้วเป็นการเรียนรู้การปฏิบัติตนในชีวิตประจำวันและพัฒนาการต่าง ๆ เช่น การพูด การกิน การเดิน การแต่งตัว กิจกรรมในครัวเรือน เช่น การถูพื้นในบ้านต้องทำเป็น การเย็บผ้า การแก้เครื่องใช้อะไรนิด ๆ หน่อย ๆ และมีการเรียนความรู้ที่จะประกอบอาชีพตามอาชีพพ่อแม่ เช่น ชาวนาก็เอาลูกไปทำนา ชาวประมง ช่างฝีมือต่าง ๆ หรือว่าเห็นว่าพ่อแม่ทำอย่างนั้นอยู่ในบรรยากาศอย่างนั้นก็ทำตามไป ...

จากพื้นฐานความเป็นนักอ่าน ความใฝ่เรียนรู้อย่างต่อเนื่อง เมื่อเจริญพระชันษาขึ้น สมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดา ฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารีจึงทรงเป็นนักการศึกษาที่สนพระทัยศาสตร์ต่าง ๆ หลายแขนง โปรดการศึกษาค้นคว้าที่กว้างขวางรอบด้าน มิใช่เฉพาะสิ่งที่กำหนดไว้ในหลักสูตรเท่านั้น ทรงสำเร็จการศึกษาทางด้านอักษรศาสตร์ในระดับปริญญาตรีและปริญญาโท (สาขาวิชาประวัติศาสตร์ สาขาวิชาจารึกภาษาตะวันออกและสาขาวิชาภาษาบาลี - สันสกฤต ตามลำดับ) จากนั้น ทรงศึกษาต่อระดับปริญญาเอกในสาขาวิชาพัฒนศึกษาศาสตร์ อันเป็นวิชาการที่ว่าด้วยการพัฒนาโดยใช้การศึกษาการเรียนรู้เป็นแกน และยังทรงเข้ารับการฝึกอบรมและศึกษาหาความรู้เกี่ยวกับวิทยาการแขนงอื่น ๆ ที่สนพระทัยและทรงเห็นว่าเป็นประโยชน์ต่อการทรงงานอย่างต่อเนื่อง

นอกจากจะสนพระทัยในศาสตร์ที่เป็นพื้นฐาน ยังทรงมีทักษะทางด้านภาษาต่างประเทศหลายภาษา อาทิ บาลี-สันสกฤต จีน เขมร อังกฤษ ฝรั่งเศส เยอรมัน ละติน ทำให้ทรงสามารถศึกษาค้นคว้าจากแหล่งข้อมูลต่างประเทศได้อย่างกว้างขวาง ทรงเน้น ความสำคัญของความรู้ภาษาและการใช้ภาษา ทั้งเพื่อการศึกษาค้นคว้าและการติดต่อสื่อสาร ที่สำคัญคือภาษาไทย ทรงเน้นว่าต้องอ่านจับความให้ได้ พูดและเขียนให้ชัดเจน ถูกกาลเทศะ การมีความรู้ภาษาต่างประเทศโดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งภาษาอังกฤษมีความสำคัญมากเช่นกัน ในด้านการค้นคว้าหาความรู้ เนื่องจากข้อเขียนต่าง ๆ ในด้านวิชาการ มีที่เป็นภาษาอังกฤษมากที่สุด ถ้าใช้ได้แต่ข้อมูลที่เป็นภาษาไทย ความรู้จะแคบ เพราะว่าอ่านได้แต่สิ่งที่คนไทยเขียน การแปลข้อความมาจากต่างประเทศอาจจะคลาดเคลื่อนได้ การมีความรู้ภาษาสำคัญที่ใช้ติดต่อสื่อสารกันเป็นสิ่งจำเป็น ทั้งด้านเอกสาร และการสื่อสารผ่านคอมพิวเตอร์ระบบอินเตอร์เน็ต เพื่อติดต่อกับนักวิชาการหรือนักธุรกิจได้ทั่วโลก สามารถเข้าถึงฐานข้อมูลต่าง ๆ มากมาย เสนองานวิจัยให้ผู้อื่นวิจารณ์ ขอความรู้หรือพูดคุยกับผู้สนใจเรื่องเดียวกันได้ทั่วโลก รวมทั้งการรับ-ส่งข้อมูลในลักษณะมัลติมีเดีย (Multimedia) นอกจากภาษาอังกฤษซึ่งจะเป็นภาษาสากลแล้ว ทรงเห็นว่าภาษาต่างประเทศภาษาที่สองนั้น ถ้ามีความรู้ได้ก็มีประโยชน์
