Inexhaustible source of our independence – a centuries-old struggle of Kazakh people and their indomitable will to freedom.”

Nursultan Nazarbayev, President of Kazakhstan

The history of Kazakhstan in the 20th century is interconnected with the history of the USSR (The Union of Soviet Socialist Republics). However, it is another topic for discussion. Therefore in this blog post I will only consider the part why the 16th of December is important for Kazakhstan, and how it is related to Soviet Union.

To achieve independence, Kazakh people had to struggle a lot. The most important revolution on the way to independence happened December 17-18th, 1986, in Almaty. The official version of this revolt was that Soviet leader, Mikhail Gorbachev, dismissed the national leader – the first secretary of the Communist Party of Kazakhstan Dinmukhamed Kunaev, and replaced him with Gennadiy Kolbin, who never worked in Kazakh lands.

Rioters demanded to leave native resident on the leadership position. Later, Kazakh youth unrest took place in other cities and regions in Kazakhstan. December events in Kazakhstan became one of the first Soviet People’s rallies against the dictators of the central power. Similar events occurred earlier in 1986 in Yakutia, and later in other national republics of the Soviet Union. According data published in Kazakhstan 8500 people were detained by law enforcement, 1700 were seriously injured, more than 5324 people were questioned by the Prosecutor’s Office, 900 people were subjected to administrative penalties, 319 people laid off from work, and 309 students were expelled from colleges.

Kazakhstan declared independence on December 16, 1991, exactly five years after these “December Events” (“Zheltoksan”). Soviet ideology failed, and Kazakhstan became an independent, democratic country. All these historic events will never be forgotten, and every year, on 16th and 17th of December, Kazakhstan residents celebrate the Independence Day. This year, in Astana, official events included 3 concerts, several exhibitions and a disco on the Central Square. And of course, all of it ends with a great firework!
