วันที่ 29 เมษายน 2559 ผู้สื่อข่าวรายงานว่า นายธนวรรธน์ พลวิชัย ผู้อำนวยการศูนย์พยากรณ์เศรษฐกิจและธุรกิจ มหาวิทยาลัยหอการค้าไทย เปิดเผยผลสำรวจแรงงานไทย ผู้มีรายได้ต่ำกว่า 15,000 บาท พบว่า ร้อยละ 95.9 มีหนี้สินและภาระหนี้ครัวเรือนสูงสุดในรอบ 8 ปี อยู่ที่ 119,061.74 บาท โดยจำแนกเป็นหนี้ในระบบ ร้อยละ 39.38 หนี้นอกระบบ ร้อยละ 60.62 สูงสุดเท่าที่เคยมี และมีอัตราผ่อนชำระเฉลี่ยต่อเดือน 8,114.31 บาท แบ่งเป็นชำระหนี้ในระบบ 5,889.53 บาท หนี้นอกระบบ 9,657.78 บาท ซึ่งถือว่าสูงสุดเท่าที่เคยมีมาเช่นกัน
ในส่วนของวัตถุประสงค์ในการกู้เงินของผู้ใช้แรงงาน มีดังนี้ ...

- ใช้จ่ายประจำวัน ร้อยละ 36.4 เปอร์เซ็นต์
- ซื้อบ้าน ร้อยละ 16.7 เปอร์เซ็นต์
- ใช้คืนเงินกู้ ร้อยละ 16.1 เปอร์เซ็นต์
- ซื้อรถยนต์ ร้อยละ 15.2 เปอร์เซ็นต์

ขณะที่ แรงงานร้อยละ 95.7 เปอร์เซ็นต์ ได้มีการเรียกร้องให้มีการปรับค่าจ้างขั้นต่ำขึ้นจาก 300 บาท เป็น 356.76 บาทต่อวัน โดยให้เหตุผลว่าเพื่อให้สอดคล้องกับภาวะค่าครองชีพ ซึ่งหากไม่สามารถปรับขึ้นได้ ก็ควรจะมีการปรับค่าสาธารณูปโภค อาทิ ค่าอาหาร ค่าเดินทาง ให้อยู่ในระดับที่เหมาะสม ไม่ควรปรับขึ้นตามค่าแรงขั้นต่ำ
