ประวัติความเป็นมาของเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดภาษาไทยใน Blog นี้ ผู้เขียนได้เรียบเรียงจากแหล่งข้อมูลอ้างอิงที่ทรงคุณค่า 3 แหล่งด้วยกันคือ

เครื่องพิมพ์ดีดภาษาไทย เกิดขึ้นเมื่อ Edwin Hunter Mcfarland ชาวอเมริกัน ซึ่งรับราชการ ในตำแหน่งเลขานุการส่วนพระองค์ ในสมเด็จกรมพระยาดำรงราชานุภาพ เสนาบดีกระทรวงธรรมการ ในรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 5 ได้มีแนวความคิดที่จะสร้างเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดภาษาไทยขึ้น

พระอาจวิทยาคม (น้องชาย) และ โรงงานสมิทพรีเมียร์ในนิวยอร์ค จึงได้เดินทางกลับไปประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา เพื่อสำรวจหาโรงงานที่สามารถผลิตเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดภาษาไทยได้ ในที่สุดก็ได้โรงงาน Smith Premier ซึ่งอยู่ที่กรุงนิวยอร์คเป็นผู้ผลิตให้ โดย Mcfarland เป็นผู้คิดแบบและควบคุมการผลิต จนกระทั่งสำเร็จเป็นเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดภาษาไทย ชนิดแป้นอักษร 7 แถว ทำงานแบบตรึงแคร่อักษร (fixed carriage typed typewriter) ซึ่งสามารถใช้งานได้ดี แต่ในขณะออกแบบแป้นอักษรไทยเพื่อบรรจุลงในแผงแป้นอักษรนั้น ปรากฏว่ Mcfarland ได้ลืมบรรจุตัวอักษร "ฃ" ( ขอ ขวด ) และ ฅ (คอ คน) ลงไปด้วย แต่โชคดีที่ยังมีอักษรอื่นที่พ้องเสียงสามารถใช้แทนกันได้ จึงถือได้ว่า Edwin Hunter Mcfarland คือผู้คิดประดิษฐ์เครื่องพิมพ์ดีดภาษาไทยได้เป็นคนแรก

เครื่องพิมพ์ดีดไทยสมิทพรีเมียร์แบบแป้นพิมพ์ 7 แถว( 1 ตัวอักษรต่อ 1 แป้น) หลังจากนั้นในปี พ.ศ. 2435 Mcfarland ได้นำเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดดังกล่าวเข้ามาถวายพระเจ้าอยู่หัวรัชกาลที่ 5 ซึ่งพระองค์ได้ทรงทดลองพิมพ์และเป็นที่พอพระราชหฤทัยอย่างยิ่ง เราจึงถือว่าพระบาทสมเด็จพระจุลจอมเกล้าเจ้าอยู่หัว รัชกาลที่ 5 เป็นนักพิมพ์ดีดไทยคนแรก ซึ่งต่อมาได้ทรงสั่งซื้อเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดภาษาไทย Smith Premier จำนวน 17 เครื่องเข้ามาใช้ในราชการ แต่เนื่องจากเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดชนิดนี้มีแป้นอักษรถึง 7 แถว จึงไม่สามารถใช้วิธีการพิมพ์สัมผัสอย่างในปัจจุบันได้ ต้องพิมพ์โดยวิธีใช้นิ้วเคาะทีละแป้นต่อมา Mcfarland ได้เดินทางกลับไปสหรัฐฯและอยู่ที่นั่นจนกระทั่งถึงแก่กรรมในปี พ.ศ. 2438 นายแพทย์ George B. Mcfarland หรือ อำมาตย์เอก พระอาจวิทยาคม ซึ่งเป็นน้องชายก็ได้รับสืบทอดกิจการเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดของพี่ชายมาไว้ และได้นำไปตั้งแสดงและสาธิตในร้านทำฟันของตนเอง จนเป็นที่รู้จักและสนใจของประชาชนอย่างมาก ดังนั้น Mcfarland จึงได้สั่งซื้อเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดภาษาไทย Smith Premier เข้ามาจำหน่าย โดยตั้งร้านที่หัวมุมถนนเจริญกรุงตัดกับถนนวังบูรพา ชื่อร้าน Smith Premier Store ในปี พ.ศ. 2441

ต่อมาภายหลังบริษัท Smith Premier ประเทศอเมริกา ได้ขายสิทธิบัตรการผลิต ให้แก่บริษัท Remington และบริษัท Remington ก็ได้ปรับปรุงเครื่องพิมพ์ดีดภาษาไทย ให้เป็นแบบที่สามารถเลื่อนและยกแคร่อักษรได้ (Sliding, Shifting Carriage) และลดจำนวนแป้นอักษรลงมาเหลือ 4 แถว แต่ก็ยังมีข้อบกพร่องอยู่บ้าง ดังนั้น พระอาจวิทยาคม จึงได้ปรึกษากับพนักงานในบริษัทของท่าน คือ นายสวัสดิ์ มากประยูร กับ นายสุวรรณประเสริฐ เกษมณี โดย นายสวัสดิ์ มากประยูร ทำหน้าที่ออกแบบประดิษฐ์ก้านอักษร และนายสุวรรณประเสริฐ เกษมณี ทำหน้าที่ออกแบบจัดวางตำแหน่งแป้นอักษร เพื่อให้สามารถพิมพ์ได้ถนัดและรวดเร็ว จนสำเร็จในปี พ.ศ. 2474 โดยใช้เวลาพัฒนา 7 ปี และเรียกแป้นอักษรแบบใหม่นี้ว่าแป้นเกษมณี ตามนามสุกลของผู้ออกแบบ โดยแป้นแบบเกษมณีมีรูปแบบการจัดวางตัวอักษรในแป้นเหย้าเป็น "ฟ ห ก ด ่ า ส ว"
