ในพระธรรมปฐมกาล พระเจ้าทรงเนรมิตสร้างสรรพสิ่ง [5] โดยทรงใช้เวลาในการสร้างโลกทั้งสิ้น 6 วัน และทรงใช้เวลาอีก 1 วันเพื่อพักผ่อน จึงเป็นที่มาของการกำหนดให้ 1 สัปดาห์ มี 7 วัน และกำหนดให้มี 1 วันเป็นวันพักผ่อน ที่มักพบในพระคัมภีร์ว่า "วันสะบาโต" ชาวยิวเคร่งครัด ในวันสะบาโตมาก ไม่ทำอะไรในวันนั้น กิจกรรมที่อนุญาตให้ทำในวันนั้นมีจำนวนจำกัดมาก การไม่เคารพวันสะบาโต เสมือนการไม่ยำเกรงพระเจ้าเลยทีเดียว

* วันที่ 1 ทรงเนรมิตสร้างฟ้าและแผ่นดิน แผ่นดินก็ว่างเปล่า [7] ทรงแยกความสว่างออกจากความมืด พระเจ้าทรงเรียกความสว่างนั้นว่าวัน และความมืดนั้นว่า คืน มีเวลาเย็นและเวลาเช้า [8]

* วันที่ 3 พระเจ้าทรงแยกแผ่นดินออกจากแผ่นน้ำ และทรงเรียกแผ่นน้ำนั้นว่า ทะเล ทรงเนรมิตให้เกิดพืช ทั้งผัก หญ้า และต้นไม้นานาชนิด
* วันที่ 4 พระเจ้าทรงสร้างดวงอาทิตย์ และดวงจันทร์ ให้เป็นหมายกำหนดฤดู วัน ปี [10] และทรงสร้างดาวต่างๆ
* วันที่ 5 พระเจ้าทรงสร้างสัตว์ทะเล และนกในอากาศ และทรงอวยพระพรแก่สัตว์เหล่านั้นว่า "...จงมีลูกดกทวีมากขึ้น จนเต็มน้ำในทะเล และให้นกทวีมากขึ้นบนแผ่นดิน..." [11]
