1. อนุรักษ์ศิลปวัตถุทางด้านทัศนศิลป์ที่ทรงคุณค่าและถือได้ว่าเป็นมรดกทางศิลปวัฒนธรรมของชนพื้นเมือง โดยการรวบรวบศิลปวัตถุมาอนุรักษ์ไว้ตามกระบวนการพิพิธภัณฑ์ เพื่อธำรงคุณค่าและความเป็นเอกลักษณ์ของชาติออสเตรเลีย
2. ศึกษา วิเคราะห์ วิจัย ศิลปวัตถุทางด้านทัศนศิลป์ในพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ หอศิลป และสถานที่ที่เกี่ยวข้องเพื่อให้เกิดองค์ความรู้ และนำความรู้ที่ได้มาเผยแพร่เพื่อเพิ่มความรู้ความเข้าใจในงานศิลปะทั้งชาวออสเตรเลียและชาวต่างประเทศ
3. พัฒนาและเพิ่มศักยภาพระบบการบริหารจัดการของพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ หอศิลปให้ได้มาตรฐานแหล่งเรียนรู้ในระดับสากล
4. ประชาสัมพันธ์ให้ประชาชนทั่วไปตลอดจนหน่วยงานต่างๆทั้งภาครัฐและเอกชนเข้า ใจ บทบาทและหน้าที่ของพิพิธภัณฑสถานแห่งชาติ หอศิลป ในฐานะแหล่งเรียนรู้ของสังคมอย่างแท้จริง
5. สร้างเครือข่ายกับองค์กรต่างๆทั้งภาครัฐและเอกชน เพื่อช่วยกันส่งเสริมและสนับสนุนให้ หอศิลป์ในประเทศเป็นแหล่งเรียนรู้ที่มีประสิทธิภาพและได้มาตรฐานสากล
