ในการที่ไทยจะมียุทธศาสตร์สู่ประชาคมอาเซียนนั้น จุดเริ่มต้นคือ การทำ SWOT analysis คือการวิเคราะห์ผล กระทบของประชาคมอาเซียนต่อไทย รวมทั้งวิเคราะห์จุดอ่อน-จุดแข็งของไทยในประชาคมอาเซียน คอลัมน์กระบวนทรรศน์ในวันนี้ จะวิเคราะห์ผลกระทบของประชาคมอาเซียนต่อไทย ดังนี้ ประชาคมการเมืองและความมั่นคงอาเซียน

ประชาคมการเมืองและความมั่นคงอาเซียน (ASEAN Political-Security Community : APSC) นั้น เรื่องสำคัญคือ ความร่วมมือในด้านสิทธิมนุษยชน และความร่วมมือในประเด็นความมั่นคงในรูปแบบใหม่ ได้แก่ อาชญากรรมข้ามชาติ การค้ามนุษย์ข้ามชาติ การค้ายาเสพติดข้ามชาติ และปัญหาภัยพิบัติ เป็นต้น สำหรับผลกระทบของ APSC ต่อไทยนั้น ในด้านความร่วมมือสิทธิมนุษยชน ผลกระทบในเชิงบวกคือ ความร่วมมือในอาเซียนในการส่งเสริมประชาธิปไตยและสิทธิมนุษยชน จะเพิ่มมากขึ้น อย่างไรก็ตาม ผลกระทบในเชิงลบ คือ แม้ว่าจะมีความร่วมมือในด้านนี้มากขึ้น แต่ปัญหาการละเมิดสิทธิมนุษยชนก็คงจะเพิ่มมากขึ้นด้วย ซึ่งโยงไปถึงเรื่องการค้ามนุษย์ การกดขี่แรงงานต่างด้าว นอกจากนั้น ยังอาจจะเกิดปัญหาเรื่องการย้ายถิ่นฐานของคนในภูมิภาค ซึ่งอาจจะนำไปสู่ปัญหาอื่นๆ ตามมา
