เกิดเมื่อ วันพฤหัสบดีที่ ๒๘ มิถุนายน พ.ศ. ๒๔๖๐ เดิมชื่อสังเวียน เป็นบุตรคนที่ ๓ ของนายควง นางสมบุญ สังข์สุวรรณ เกิดที่ตำบลสาลี อำเภอบางปลาม้า จังหวัดสุพรรณบุรี มีพี่น้อง ๕ คน เมื่ออายุ ๖ ขวบ เข้าเรียนหนังสือที่โรงเรียนประชาบาล วัดบางนมโค อำเภอเสนา จังหวัดพระนครศรีอยุธยา จนจบชั้นประถมปีที่ ๔ เมื่ออายุ ๑๕ ปี เข้ามาอยู่กับท่านยายที่บ้านหน้าวัดเรไร อำเภอตลิ่งชัน จังหวัดธนบุรี ในสมัยนั้น และได้ศึกษาวิชาแพทย์แผนโบราณ อายุ ๑๙ ปี เข้าเป็นเภสัชกรทหารเรือ สังกัดกรมการแพทย์ทหารเรือ พออายุครบบวช

อุปสมบท เมื่อวันที่ ๑๖ กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๐ เวลา ๑๓.๐๐ น. ณ วัดบางนมโค โดยมีพระครูรัตนาภิรมย์ เป็นพระอุปัชฌาย์ พระครูวิหารกิจจานุการ เป็นพระกรรมวาจาจารย์ พระอาจารย์เล็ก เกสโร เป็นพระอนุสาวนาจารย์ อายุ ๒๑ ปี สอบได้นักธรรมตรี อายุ ๒๒ ปี สอบได้นักธรรมโท อายุ ๒๓ ปี สอบได้ นักธรรมเอก

ระหว่างปี พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๐-๒๔๘๑ ได้ศึกษาพระกรรมฐาน จากครูบาอาจารย์หลายท่าน อาทิเช่นหลวงพ่อปาน โสนันโท วัดบางนมโค, หลวงพ่อจง พุทธสโร วัดหน้าต่างนอก, พระอาจารย์เล็ก เกสโร วัดบางนมโค, พระครูรัตนาภิรมย์ วัดบ้านแพน, พระครูอุดมสมาจารย์ วัดน้ำเต้า, หลวงพ่อสุ่น วัดบางปลาหมอ, หลวงพ่อเนียม วัดน้อย, หลวงพ่อโหน่ง วัดอัมพวัน (วัดคลองมะดัน) และหลวงพ่อเรื่อง วัดใหม่พิณสุวรรณ

พ.ศ. ๒๔๘๑ เข้ามาจำพรรษาที่วัดช่างเหล็ก อำเภอตลิ่งชัน ธนบุรี เพื่อเรียนบาลี ต่อมา สอบได้เปรียญธรรม ๓ ประโยค ได้ย้ายมาอยู่ที่วัดอนงคาราม หลังจากนั้นได้เป็นรองเจ้าคณะ ๔ วัดประยูรวงศาวาส เป็นเจ้าอาวาสวัดบางนมโค และย้ายไปอยู่อีกหลายวัด

พ.ศ. ๒๕๑๑ จึงมาอยู่วัดท่าซุง บูรณะซ่อมสร้างและขยายวัดท่าซุง จากเดิมมีพื้นที่ ๖ ไร่เศษ จนกระทั่งเป็นวัดที่มีบริเวณพื้นที่ประมาณ ๒๘๙ ไร่

พ.ศ. ๒๕๒๗ ได้รับพระราชทานสมณศักดิ์ เป็นพระราชาคณะชั้นสามัญที่ "พระสุธรรมยานเถร"

พ.ศ. ๒๕๓๒ ได้รับพระราชทานเลื่อนสมณศักดิ์ เป็นพระราชาคณะชั้นราชที่ "พระราชพรหมยาน ไพศาลภาวนานุสิฐ มหาคณิสสร บวรสังฆาราม คามวาสี"

ตลอดระยะเวลาที่อุปสมบทอยู่ หลวงพ่อพระราชพรหมยาน (หลวงพ่อฤาษีลิงดำ) ได้ทำหน้าที่ของพระสงฆ์ ในพระพุทธศาสนาอย่างสมบูรณ์ กล่าวคือ

ทางด้านชาติ ได้สร้างโรงพยาบาล , สร้างโรงเรียน , จัดตั้งธนาคารข้าว , ออกเยี่ยมเยียน ทหารหาญของชาติและตำรวจตระเวณชายแดนตามหน่วยต่างๆ เพื่อปลุกปลอบขวัญและกำลังใจ และ แจกอาหาร , ยา , อุปกรณ์อำนวยความสะดวก และวัตถุมงคลทั่วประเทศ


ทางด้านพระศาสนา ได้สั่งสอนพุทธบริษัทศิษยานุศิษย์ให้มุ่งพระนิพพานเป็นหลัก โดยให้ประพฤติปฏิบัติกาย , วาจา , ใจ , ในทาน , ในศีลและในกรรมฐาน ๑๐ ทัศ และมหาสติปัฏฐานสูตร ได้พิมพ์หนังสือคำสอนกว่า ๑๕ เรื่อง และบันทึกเทปคำสอนกว่า ๑,๐๐๐ เรื่อง นอกจากนี้ยังได้แสดงธรรม เทศนาทางสถานีวิทยุกระจายเสียงและวิทยุโทรทัศน์เป็นครั้งคราว นอกจากนี้ ยังเดินทางไปสงเคราะห์คณะศิษย์ในต่างจังหวัดและต่างประเทศทุกๆ ปี

ทางด้านวัตถุ ท่านได้ช่วยสร้างพระพุทธรูปและถาวรวัตถุไว้ในพระพุทธศาสนามากกว่า ๓๐ วัด รวมทั้งการบูรณะฟื้นฟูวัดท่าซุงด้วยเงินกว่า ๖๐๐ ล้านบาท ได้สร้างพระไตรปิฎก , หนังสือมูลกัจจายน์ และถวายผ้าไตรแก่วัดต่างๆ ปีละไม่ต่ำกว่า ๒๐๐ ไตร
