มหาวิทยาลัยเทคโนโลยีสุรนารี ได้รับพระมหากรุณาธิคุณจากสมเด็จพระเทพรัตนราชสุดาฯ สยามบรมราชกุมารี เสด็จพระราชดำเนินทรงเปิดกลุ่มอาคารเทคโนธานี (Technopolis) ในวันพุธที่ 29 มีนาคม 2538 ประกอบด้วยอาคารจำนวน 9 หลัง พื้นที่รวม 45,000 ตารางเมตร บนพื้นที่ 600 ไร่ แผนการจัดตั้งเทคโนธานี เป็นส่วนหนึ่งของแผนการจัดตั้งมหาวิทยาลัย ในช่วงแรกก่อนที่จะพัฒนาให้เป็นอุทยานวิทยาศาสตร์และเทคโนโลยีที่สมบูรณ์ รัฐบาลได้กำหนดที่จะใช้บริเวณเทคโนธานีเป็นสถานที่จัดงานแสดงเกษตรและอุตสาหกรรมโลกในปี 2538 (WorldTech’95 Thailand) ซึ่งเป็นการแสดงความก้าวหน้าทางเทคโนโลยีระดับชาติ เป็นผลให้มหาวิทยาลัยเป็นที่รู้จักอย่างกว้างขวาง

เทคโนธานีมีหน้าที่เป็นหน่วยงานกลางของมหาวิทยาลัยมีฐานะเทียบเท่าสำนักวิชา ศูนย์และสถาบันของมหาวิทยาลัย ดำเนินภารกิจด้านการบริการวิชาการแก่สังคม และด้านการปรับแปลงถ่ายทอดเทคโนโลยีที่เหมาะสม รายละเอียดตามข้อกำหนด มทส. ว่าด้วยการจัดตั้งเทคโนธานี พ.ศ. 2539 ประกาศ ณ วันที่ 23 เมษายน พ.ศ. 2539 โดยแบ่งส่วนงานออกเป็น 6 ฝ่าย ได้แก่ ฝ่ายธุรการ สถานฟูมฟักเทคโนโลยี สถานนวัตกรรม สถานส่งเสริมเทคโนโลยี ฝ่ายจัดแสดงเทคโนโลยี และฝ่ายบริการวิชาการ

ปี พ.ศ. 2541 เทคโนธานีได้แบ่งส่วนงานออกเป็น 7 ฝ่าย ซึ่งมี 6 ฝ่ายเดิม และได้เพิ่มสุรสัมนาคารเป็นฝ่ายที่ 7

ปี พ.ศ. 2543 ได้โอนย้ายโครงการสหกิจศึกษาและพัฒนาอาชีพจากฝ่ายวิชาการมาเป็นงานส่วนหนึ่งของเทคโนธานี และปรับโครงสร้างจาก 5 ฝ่าย เป็น 3 ฝ่าย คือ ฝ่ายบริหารงานทั่วไป ฝ่ายบริการวิชาการ และฝ่ายปรับแปลงและถ่ายทอดเทคโนโลยี ในปีเดียวกันเทคโนธานีได้รับรองระบบคุณภาพ ISO 9002 จากบริษัท SGS (Thailand) Ltd.

ปี พ.ศ.2546 ได้ปรับโครงสร้างของเทคโนธานีเป็น 5 ฝ่าย คือ ฝ่ายบริหารงานทั่วไป ฝ่ายบริการวิชาการ ฝ่ายปรับแปลงและถ่ายทอดเทคโนโลยี ฝ่ายโครงการพัฒนาเทคโนโลยีและสารสนเทศและฝ่ายโครงการกิจกรรมและโครงการพิเศษ ย้ายโครงการสหกิจศึกษาและพัฒนาอาชีพไปสังกัดฝ่ายวิชาการ

ปี พ.ศ. 2547 เทคโนธานีได้รับการรับรองการปรับระบบบริหารคุณภาพ ISO 9002 เป็น ISO 9001 : 2000 จากบริษัท SGS (Thailand) Ltd.

ปี พ.ศ. 2549 ได้ปรับโครงสร้างการบริหารของเทคโนธานีเป็น 3 ฝ่าย 4 โครงการ คือ ฝ่ายบริหารงานทั่วไป ฝ่ายบริการวิชาการ ฝ่ายปรับแปลงและถ่ายทอดเทคโนโลยี โครงการอุทยานผีเสื้อ โครงการหน่วยบ่มเพาะวิสาหกิจ (SUT – UBI) โครงการพัฒนาเทคโนโลยีของอุตสาหกรรมไทย (iTAP) และโครงการศูนย์การเรียนรู้ของชุมชน์

ปี พ.ศ. 2551 – 2554 มีการแบ่งส่วนงานเป็น 3 ฝ่าย 9 โครงการ โดยได้มีการปรับเพิ่มโครงการภายใต้โครงสร้างบริหารงานเทคโนธานีอีก 5 โครงการ ได้แก่ โครงการศูนย์วิจัยมันสำปะหลังและผลิตภัณฑ์ โครงการหน่วยบริการงานแปลและล่าม โครงการหน่วยบริการทางห้องปฏิบัติการ โครงการห้องเรียนวิทยาศาสตร์ และโครงการเมืองจราจรจำลอง และในปี พ.ศ. 2552 ได้เปลี่ยนชื่อของโครงการหน่วยบ่มเพาะวิสาหกิจ เป็น โครงการอุทยานวิทยาศาสตร์

ปี พ.ศ. 2555 – 2556 ในรอบปีงบประมาณ 2556 เป็นช่วงที่อยู่ระหว่างการทดลองใช้โครงสร้างบริหารเทคโนธานีใหม่ ที่คำนึงถึงการบรรลุวิสัยทัศน์อย่างมีประสิทธิภาพ และคำนึงถึงบทบาทพันธกิจ ซึ่งจะเพิ่มสูงขึ้นและปรับเปลี่ยนไปในเชิงรุกมากขึ้น ส่งเสริมการบูรณาการภายในกลุ่มงาน และเชื่อมโยงภารกิจภายนอกกลุ่มงานให้สอดคล้องกัน มีการบริหารจัดการแบบเบ็ดเสร็จ (One Step Service) มีการปรับลดขั้นตอนการบริหารจัดการด้านการเงิน เป็นต้น ซึ่งจะเกิดความคล่องตัวในการสนับสนุนการปฏิบัติงานด้านบริการวิชาการของคณาจารย์ในแต่ละสำนักวิชาให้เกิดประสิทธิภาพยิ่งขึ้น

เมื่อวันที่ 22 กุมภาพันธ์ 2557 ได้อนุมัติในหลักการการปรับโครงสร้างบริหารงานเทคโนธานี โดยให้ปรับชื่อหน่วยงานภายในเทคโนธานีที่เรียกว่า “สำนักงานบริหาร...” เป็น “สำนักงาน..” โดยให้ตัดคำว่า “บริหาร” ออก เพื่อให้สื่อความหมายกว้างขึ้น ดังนั้น จึงได้ปรับชื่อหน่วยงานตามข้อเสนอแนะของสภามหาวิทยาลัย ดังนี้ 1) สำนักงานผู้อำนวยการเทคโนธานี 2) สำนักงานอุทยานการเรียนรู้สิรินธร 3) สำนักงานอุทยานวิทยาศาสตร์และนวัตกรรม และ 4) สำนักงานบริการวิชาการและโครงการพิเศษ
