ประเพณีแห่ผีตาโขนจัดเป็นส่วนหนึ่งในงานบุญประเพณีใหญ่หรือที่เรียกว่า "งานบุญหลวง" หรือ "บุญผะเหวด" ซึ่งตรงกับเดือน 7 มีขึ้นที่อำเภอด่านซ้าย จังหวัดเลย และจัดเป็นการละเล่นที่ถือเป็นประเพณีทุกปี เกี่ยวโยงกับ งานบุญพระเวสหรือเทศน์ มหาชาติ ประจำปีกับพระธาตุศรีสองรัก ปูชนียสถานสำคัญของชาวด่านซ้าย สำหรับในปีนี้ ประเพณีบุญหลวงและการละเล่นผีตาโขน ประจำปี 2556 ขึ้นใน วันที่ 11-12 ก.ค .2556 โดยขบวนแห่ผีตาโขน จะจัดขึ้นใน วันที่ 11 กรกฎาคม 2556 บริเวณวัดโพนชัยและหน้าที่ ว่าการอำเภอด่านซ้าย จังหวัดเลยงานบุญหลวง ประเพณผีตาโขนของอำเภอด่านซ้ายจังหวัดเลย เป็นประเพณีสำคัญ เพราะอยู่ใน สิบสองเดือนสี่งานบุญผะเหวด (พระเวส)แหผีตาโขนแม้จะมีเล่นในอีสานถิ่นอื่นบ้าง แต่ที่วัดโพนชัย อำเภอด่านซ้าย จังหวัดเลย เป็นที่รู้จักและ จะยังคงอยู่คู่กับ "พระธาตุศรีสองรัก" ตลอดไป
ต้นกำเนิดผีตาโขน

ชนิดของผีตาโขน
ผีตาโขน ในขบวนแห่จะแยกเป็น 2 ชนิดคือ ผีตาโขนใหญ่และผีตาโขนเล็ก

เนื่องจากงานประเพณีผีตาโขนเป็นงานบุญใหญ่ซึ่งเรียกกันว่างานบุญหลวง จัดขึ้นที่วัดโพนชัย อ.ด่านซ้าย โดยมี การละเล่นผีตาโขน มีการเทศน์มหาชาติมีการทำบุญพระธาตุศรีสองรักและงานบุญต่างๆเข้ามาผสมอยู่รวมๆกัน จึงมีการจัดงานกัน 3 วัน
