วัดทุ่งศรีเมือง ตั้งอยู่บริเวณถนนหลวง ในเขตเทศบาลนครอุบลราชธานี อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดอุบลราชธานี ทางทิศตะวันออกของทุ่งศรีเมือง เมื่อเนื้อที่ 19 ไร่ 2 งาน 23 ตารางวา สันนิษฐานสร้างขึ้นเมื่อ พ.ศ. 2356 ตรงกับรัชสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธเลิศหล้านภาลัย รัชกาลที่ 2 ในยุคสมัยสมเด็จกรมหลวงสรรพสิทธิประสงค์ ข้าหลวงต่างพระองค์ ได้ตกลงกับเจ้าของที่ดินหลายคน ยกที่ดิน (ที่ทำนา) ให้กับทางราชการ แรกๆ ชาวเมืองเรียกว่า "ทุ่งศรีเมือง" แต่เนื่องจากทุ่งแห่งนี้ เป็นที่รวมของการจัดงานมหกรรมใหญ่ๆ เช่น งานเฉลิมพระชนมพรรษา งานรัฐธรรมนูญ เป็นต้น และเป็นทุ่งประดับเมือง จึงเรียกว่า "ทุ่งศรีเมือง"

ต่อมาภายหลังจึงได้สร้างหอพระพุทธบาทขึ้น ณ ท่ามกลางบริเวณที่เจริญสมณะธรรม โดยมีจุดประสงค์ที่จะจำลองพระพุทธบาท จำลองให้คนได้กราบไหว้ของพุทธบริษัทที่อุบลราชธานี ไม่ต้องเดินทางไปที่สระบุรี โดยให้ครูช่างชาวเวียงจันทน์ เป็นช่างดำเนินการก่อสร้าง ซึ่งมีความกว้าง 6 เมตร ยาว 13 เมตร หลังคาทรงไทยศิลปะเวียงจันทร์ ต่อมาได้พูนดินบริเวณลานหอพระพุทธบาท เพื่อป้องกันไม่ให้น้ำท่วมในฤดูฝน โดยได้สร้างเป็นเขื่อนกำแพงแก้วหอพระพุทธบาท มีสองชั้นรอบๆพระพุทธบาท ขนาดกว้าง 23 เมตร ยาว 32 เมตร พูนให้สูงเหมือนเป็นฐานรองรับหอพระพุทธบาท โดยได้ขุดเอาดินมาจาดสระด้านทิศเหนือ ซึ่งมีขนาดกว้าง 13 เมตร ยาว 24 เมตร ลึก 3 เมตร ซึ่งสระนี้ ต่อมาภายหลังได้สร้างหอไตรไว้กลางน้ำ จึงได้ ซื่อว่า "สระหอไตร"

เมื่อได้สร้างหอพระพุทธบาทและหอไตรกลางน้ำเสร็จแล้ว เพื่อให้มีคนเฝ้ารักษาวัด คือได้สร้างกุฎิเป็นที่อยู่ของพระภิกษุและสามเณรต่อไป เพราะวัดนี้ตั้งอยู่ปลายทุ่ง ท่ามกลางเมืองอุบลราชธานี จึงได้ชื่อว่า ทุ่งศรีเมือง เป็นเหตุให้ทุ่งนาท่ามกลางเมืองอุบลราชธานี ได้ชื่อว่าทุ่งศรีเมืองตามไปด้วย

เมื่อ พ.ศ.2458 พระครูวจีสุนทร เจ้าคณะอำเภอม่วงสามสิบ ท่านพระครูวิโรจน์รัตโนบล เป็นเจ้าอาวาส ได้พาพระเณร ไปทำพลับพลา ตัดเสาศาลาการเปรียญที่คำน้ำแซบ วัดวารินทรารามในปัจจุบัน สมัยนั้นมีแต่ป่า ยังไม่มีบ้านเรือนคน และค่ายทหาร แต่เมื่อตัดเสาได้แล้ว ก็สร้างล้อลากลงแม่น้ำมูลข้ามมาสร้างศาลาการเปรียญ โดยในวันไหนมีการล่องมูล จะให้ชาวบ้านที่หาปลา หรือคนที่อยู่แถวนั้นมาช่วย เพราะเสาต้นใหญ่มาก บางวันต้องใช้กลองยาวตีเร้าใจ เพื่อให้จังหวะครั้นลากเสามาถึงวัดแล้ว ก็จัดแจงตกแต่งศาลาการเปรียญ ครั้นเตรียมการเสร็จแล้ว ก็ได้ป่าวประกาศเชิญชวนทำบุญปลูกศาลาการเปรียญ ยกศาลาและสร้างต่อจนเสร็จ
