ชาวบ้านที่อาศัยอยู่ในหมู่บ้านใกล้เคียงต่างบอกว่า ตั้งแต่มีโรงงานน้ำตาลมีกลิ่นเหม็นจากน้ำเสียและฝุ่นละอองตลอดเวลาที่มีการเปิดหีบอ้อย เพราะโรงงานน้ำตาลมีการปล่อยน้ำเสียทิ้งภายในโรงงานและมีฝุ่นละอองจากการเผาไหม้ แต่ต่างก็ยอมทนเพราะครึ่งหนึ่งของคนในชุมชนได้งานทำจากโรงงานน้ำตาลแห่งนี้ และมีความรู้สึกเกรงกลัวการกระทบกระทั่งระหว่างชาวบ้านกับโรงงานจนเกิดความรุนแรงมาโดยตลอด
นายพงษ์พัฒน์ เติมธนกิจไพศาล รองนายกเทศมนตรีตำบลลำน้ำพอง กล่าวว่า จากที่โรงงานน้ำตาลขอนแก่นได้ปล่อยน้ำเสียในที่ส่วนบุคคลของโรงงานโดยได้มีการขุดบ่อน้ำทิ้งเนื้อที่กว่า 40 ไร่ แต่อยู่นอกบริเวณโรงงาน ที่สำคัญอยู่ใกล้ชุมชนใกล้โรงเรียน เดือดร้อนกันมาก ตั้งแต่เปิดหีบอ้อยชาวบ้านและนักเรียนต้องทนแสบจมูกจากกลิ่นเหม็น จนกระทั่งวันที่ 9 กุมภาพันธ์ ตนเองและผู้บริหารของเทศบาล รวมทั้งผู้นำชุมชนกำนันผู้ใหญ่บ้านได้ลุกขึ้นมาเรียกร้องให้โรงงานรับผิดชอบเร่งแก้ปัญหาโดยเร็ว รวมทั้งให้หน่วยงานที่เกี่ยวข้องมาดูแลอย่างเร่งด่วน
