กีฬาแบดมินตันจะแบ่งผู้เล่นออกเป็น 2 ฝ่าย และแบ่งการแล่นออกเป็น 2 ประเภท คือ "ประเภทเดี่ยว" แบ่งผู้เล่นออกเป็นฝ่ายละ 1 คน และ "ประเภทคู่" แบ่งผู้เล่นออกเป็นฝ่ายละ 2 คน การเล่นรอบหนึ่งเรียกว่า 1 แมทช์ แมทช์ละ 3 เกม(บางคนเรียกเซ็ท) ตัดสินแพ้ชนะ2ใน3เกม มีกำหนดคะแนนสูงสุด 21 คะแนน ฝ่ายใดทำคะแนนได้ถึง 21 คะแนนก่อนจะเป็นผู้ชนะในเกมนั้น

กติกาเบื้องต้น
1. การออกนอกเส้น มีการกำหนดเส้นออกแต่งต่างกันในกรณีเล่นเดี่ยวและเล่นคู่
2. การเสิร์ฟลูก ตามกติกา ที่ถูกต้อง คือ
หัวไม้ขณะสัมผัสลูกต้องต่ำกว่าข้อมืออย่างเห็นได้ชัด
หัวไม้ขณะสัมผัสลูกต้องต่ำกว่าเอวอย่างเห็นได้ชัด
ผู้เล่นต้องไม่ถ่วงเวลา หรือเสริฟช้า หรือเสริฟ 2 จังหวะ การเสริฟ ต้องเสริฟไปด้วยจังหวะเดียว

การเสิร์ฟลูกที่ถูกต้อง ต้องให้แร็กเก็ตสัมผัสกับหัวลูกก่อน หากโดนขนก่อนถือว่าผิดกติกา
1. ขณะตีลูกโต้กัน ห้ามนำส่วนหนึ่งส่วนใดของร่างกายหรือไม้แบดไปสัมผัสกับเน็ท
2. ห้ามตีลูกที่ฝั่งตรงข้ามโต้กลับมาในขณะที่ลูกยังไม่ข้ามเน็ทมายังแดนเรา(Over net)
สหพันธ์แบดมินตันนานาชาติ ( IBF) ได้กำหนดให้ ทดลองใช้ระบบการนับคะแนนการแข่งขันกีฬาแบดมินตันใหม่ ในระบบ 3 x 21 คะแนน ตั้งแต่ วันที่ 1 มกราคม 2549 เป็นต้นไป

รายละเอียดของกติกาการนับคะแนน มีดังนี้
1. แมทช์หนึ่งต้องชนะให้ได้มากที่สุดใน 3 เกม
2. ทุกประเภทของการแข่งขัน ฝ่ายที่ได้ 21 คะแนนก่อนเป็นฝ่ายชนะในเกมนั้น ยกเว้นเมื่อได้ 20 คะแนนเท่ากันต้องนับต่อให้มีคะแนนห่างกัน 2 คะแนน ฝ่ายใดได้คะแนนนำ 2 คะแนนก่อนเป็นผู้ชนะ แต่ไม่เกิน 30 คะแนน หมายความว่าหากการเล่นดำเนินมาจนถึง 29 คะแนนเท่ากัน ฝ่ายใดได้ 30 คะแนนก่อน เป็นผู้ชนะ
3. ฝ่ายชนะเป็นฝ่ายส่งลูกต่อในเกมต่อไป
4. ฝ่ายชนะการเสี่ยงสิทธิ์เป็นฝ่ายส่งลูกได้ก่อน หากฝ่ายตรงข้ามทำลูก "เสีย" หรือลูกไม่ได้อยู่ในการเล่น ผู้เลือกส่งลูกก่อนจะได้คะแนนนำ 1-0 และได้ส่งลูกต่อ แต่หากผู้ส่งลูกทำลูก "เสีย" หรือลูกไม่อยู่ในการเล่น ฝ่ายตรงข้ามจะได้คะแนนตามมาทันทีเป็น 1-1 และฝ่ายตรงข้ามจะได้สิทธิ์ส่งลูกแทน ดำเนินเช่นนี้ต่อไปจนจบเกม

ประเภทคู่ให้ส่งลูกฝ่ายละ 1 ครั้ง ตามคะแนนที่ได้ ขณะที่เปลี่ยนฝ่ายส่งลูก หากคะแนนเป็นจำนวนคี่ ผู้อยู่คอร์ดด้านซ้ายเป็นผู้ส่งลูก หากคะแนนเป็นจำนวนคู่ผู้อยู่คอร์ดด้านขวาเป็นฝ่ายส่งลูก

การดิวส์
หากผู้เล่นทั้งสองฝ่ายทำคะแนนได้เท่ากันในคะแนนที่ 20 จะมีการเล่นต่อ จนกว่าว่าจะมีคะแนนมากกว่าฝ่ายตรงข้าม 2 คะแนน แต่ถ้ายังไม่สามารถทำคะแนนห่างกัน 2 แต้มได้ จะเล่นต่อไปเรื่อยๆ แต่ เมื่อแต้มได้ 29 เท่ากัน ใครที่ทำได้แต้ม 30 ก่อนจะเป็นฝ่ายชนะ


กติกาและระเบียบการแข่งขัน
1. ใช้กติกาการแข่งขันของสหพันธ์แบดมินตันนานาชาติ (I.B.F)
2. นักกีฬาจะต้องมารายงานตัวต่¬อคณะกรรมการจัดการแข่¬งขันก่อนถึงเวลากำหนดไว้ในรายการแข่¬งขันอย่¬างน้อย 30 นาที และถ้าฝ่ายหนึ่งฝ่ายใดมาถึงสนามล่าช้ากว่¬าเวลาที่กำหนดเกิน 10 นาที จะถูกคณะกรรมการปรับแพ้ทันที
3. เพื่อให้การแข่¬งขันดำเนินการให้เสร็จสิ้นหากคู่¬แข่งขันครบทั้งสองฝ่ายแล้วคณะกรรมการ สามารถดำเนินการแข่¬งขันก่¬อนเวลากำหนดได้ แต่¬ทั้งนี้ไม่¬ควรเกิน 30 นาที
4. นักกีฬาต้องเตรียมอุปกรณ์ต่¬าง ๆ ให้พร้อม
5. นักกีฬาจะเปลี่ยนลูกขนไก่¬ได้ ก็ต่¬อเมื่อได้รับอนุญาตจากคณะกรรมการ
6. การแต่¬งกายด้วยชุดกีฬาแบดมินตัน กรรมการเป็นผู้ชี้ขาด หากนักกีฬาแต่งกายไม่¬สุภาพ หรือผิดกฎ I.B.F ไม่¬ให้ลงทำการแข่¬งขัน
7. นักกีฬาต้องขออนุญาตจากคณะกรรมการ หากขอเวลานอก ดื่มน้ำ เช็ดเหงื่อ ฯ
8. การแข่¬งขันแบบแพ้คัดออก โดยให้มีการชิงตำแหน่¬งที่ 1 ที่ 2 เท่¬านั้น ส่วนตำแหน่¬งที่ 3 ผู้แพ้ในรอบรองชนะเลิศ ครองตำแหน่¬งที่ 3 ร่วมกัน
