ปัจจุบัน กรมอุทยานแห่งชาติ สัตว์ป่า และพันธุ์พืช ได้จัดแบ่งพื้นที่อนุรักษ์ในประเทศไทยออกเป็น 21 กลุ่มป่า และหนึ่งในกลุ่มป่าที่มีความสำคัญยิ่งแห่งหนึ่ง คือ กลุ่มป่าตะวันออก ซึ่งประกอบด้วยพื้นที่อุทยานแห่งชาติและเขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่ารวมทั้งสิ้น 8 แห่งด้วยกัน ในกลุ่มป่าตะวันออกนี้ พื้นที่อนุรักษ์รวม 5 แห่ง ได้มีการจัดทำแผนการจัดการพื้นที่และแผนดังกล่าวได้หมดอายุการใช้แผนไปแล้ว ได้แก่ อุทยานแห่งชาติน้ำตกพลิ้ว (พ.ศ. 2543-2547) อุทยานแห่งชาติเขาคิชฌกูฏ (พ.ศ. 2544-2548) อุทยานแห่งชาติเขาชะเมา-เขาวง (พ.ศ. 2544-2548) เขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าเขาสอยดาว (พ.ศ. 2536-2540) เขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าเขาอ่างฤาไน (พ.ศ. 2539-2543) ส่วนอีก 3 แห่ง ได้แก่ เขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าคลองเครือหวายเฉลิมพระเกียรติ อุทยานแห่งชาติน้ำตกคลองแก้ว อุทยานแห่งชาติเขาสิบห้าชั้นยังไม่มีการดำเนินการจัดทำแผนฯ
