ปัจจุบันประเทศไทยยังคงมี ระบบอุปถัมภ์หรือระบบเจ้าขุนมูลนายอยู่ ซึ่งเป็นระบบที่เน้นในเรื่องสถานะหรือความสำพันธ์ของแต่ละบุคคลมากกว่า ความสามารถจึงทำให้เกิดการพึ่งพาผู้อื่น โดยที่ผู้ที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับผู้มีอำนาจก็จะมีโอกาสในการได้รับผลประโยชน์มากกว่าผู้อื่น ซึ่งผู้นั้นอาจจะไม่มีความสามารถจึงทำให้เกิดการทุจริต ซึ่งเป็นระบบที่ส่งผลกระทบต่อระบบราชการไทยและการเมืองไทยเป็นอย่างมากรวมไปถึงการอุปถัมภ์ของชนชั้นนำทางการเมืองกับชนชั้นนำทางเศรษฐกิจ เช่นการที่นักการเมืองมีการทุจริตจึงทำให้เกิดการรัฐประหารในประเทศไทยหลายครั้ง และ การที่รัฐจะสร้างสาธารณูปโภคก็จะคำนึงถึงผลประโยชน์ทางเศรษฐกิจก่อนความต้องการของประชาชน จึงส่งผลต่อการพัฒนาสังคม การเมืองและเศรษฐกิจของประเทศไทยทำให้เกิดความล่าช้า ซึ่งระบบนี้ได้ฝังรากลึกลงไปในระบบราชการไทย ทำให้ยากต่อการแก้ปัญหาอีกทั้งยังก่อให้เกิดปัญหาต่อประเทศในระยะยาว
ฉันเห็นด้วยกับการที่จะนำระบบอุปถัมภ์ให้ออกไปจากประเทศไทย เพราะเราควรคำนึงถึงความสามารถของบุคคลมากกว่าความสัมพันธ์กับผู้มีอำนาจเพราะถ้าระบบนี้ยังคงอยู่ในสังคมไทยจะส่งผลกระทบให้เกิดการที่มนุษย์ไม่พอใจในสิ่งที่ตนเองมีอยู่ (displeased)ขาดความเป็นธรรมและความเสมอภาคในสังคม ทำให้คนในสังคมเห็นแต่ผลประโยชน์ส่วนตนมากกว่าส่วนรวม เพราะระบบอุปถัมภ์จะพิจารณาคนจากบุคคลที่รู้จักสนิทสนมคุ้นเคย หรือเป็นญาติพี่น้อง เพื่อนฝูงกัน และผลประโยชน์ที่ตนจะได้รับจากการแลกเปลี่ยนระหว่าง อำนาจ กับ เงินตราหรือสิ่งของ โดยที่ไม่คำนึงถึงผลกระทบที่จะตามมา แต่เราก็สามารถแก้ปัญหาได้โดยนำหลักความสามารถ Competence ถือเป็นหลักในระบบคุณธรรม มาแก้ไขปัญหาที่เกิดขึ้นจากระบบอุปถัมภ์ โดยยึดถือความรู้ความสามารถเป็นเกณฑ์ในการคัดเลือกบุคคลเข้าทำงานโดยเลือกผู้ที่มีความสามารถให้เหมาะสมกับตำแหน่งมากที่สุดซึ่งจะช่วยลดปัญหาความไม่เสมอภาคในสังคมลงได้
การนำระบบคุณธรรมมาปรับใช้แทนระบบอุปถัมภ์จะทำให้การบริหารงานในหน่วยงานต่างๆมีประสิทธิภาพมากยิ่งขึ้นเนื่องจากได้คนมีความรู้ความสามารถเข้ามาบริหารงาน และมีความเป็นธรรมและความเสมอภาคเกิดขึ้นภายในหน่อวยงานทำให้เจ้าหน้าที่ทำงานได้อย่างเต็มความสามารถ หน่วยงานมีความเข้มแข็งขึ้นป้องกันการแทรกแซงทางการเมือง ทำให้ประชาชนได้รับผลประโยชน์สูงสุดซึ่งเป็นไปตามหลักประชาธิปไตย
