การตกแต่ง (DECORATION ) หมายถึงการจัด ประดับเพื่อความงามของอาคาร สถานที่ทั้งภายในและนอกอาคาร รวมทั้งบริเวณที่อยู่โดยรอบของอาคารด้วย โดยการใช้สิ่งประดิษฐ์คิดค้นขึ้นหรือจากธรรมชาตินำมาดัดแปรงเพื่อการตกแต่ง เพื่อตอบสนองความต้องการทางด้านประโยชน์ใช้สอย และให้คุณค่าความสวยงาม

ศิลปตกแต่งหรือมัณฑนศิลป์
( DECORATIVE ARTS OR MINOR ARTS )
หมายถึงบรรดาผลิตกรรมศิลปะชนิดที่เรียกว่าจุลศิลป์ เช่น ช่างถม ช่างเงินช่างทอง ช่างแก้ว ช่างเครื่องปั้นดินเผา และงานช่างอื่น ๆ ถ้าศิลปตกแต่งเหล่านี้เป็นไปเพื่อประโยชน์ทางการค้า ก็อาจเรียกได้ว่าเป็น "พาณิชยศิลป์" ยังมีคำว่า ประยุกต์ศิลป์ ( APPLIED ARTS ) ซึ่งหมายความถึงศิลปตกแต่งด้วยเพราะเป็นศิลปะที่นำเอาไปใช้สำหรับวัตถุซึ่งเป็นของใช้ตามธรรมดา เหตุนี้พาณิชยศิลป์และประยุกต์ศิลป์จึงตรงกับศิลปตกแต่ง

ประวัติความเป็นมาของการตกแต่ง
