เราสามารถจำแนกปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมที่สังคมมนุษย์กำลังเผชิญอยู่ในปัจจุบันนี้ได้ 3 ปัญหาใหญ่ ๆ คือ
         1. ปัญหาการลดลงของทรัพยากรธรรมชาติ
          2. ปัญหามลภาวะหรือมลพิษทางสิ่งแวดล้อม
          3. ปัญหาการทำลายระบบนิเวศ


ปัญหาสิ่งแวดล้อมเกิดขึ้นจากสาเหตุใหญ่ 3 ประการ คือ

        1. การเพิ่มจำนวนของประชากร
