พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๘ ครูบาศรีวิชัย (นักบุญแห่งล้านนาไทย) ได้เชิญชวนให้ประชาชนชาวเหนือร่วมแรงงานร่วมใจกันสร้างถนนจากเชิงดอยขึ้นไปสู่วัดพระธาตุฯ โดยเริ่มลงมือเมื่อวันที่ ๙ พฤศจิกายน พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๘แล้วเสร็จเมื่อวันที่ ๓๐ มีนาคม พ.ศ. ๒๔๗๙ ในเวลาเพียง ๔ เดือน ๒๒ วันเท่านั้น รวมระยะทางประมาณ ๑๔ กิโลเมตร
