จอมพล จอมพลเรือ จอมพลอากาศแปลก พิบูลสงคราม (14 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2440 – 11 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2507) หรือที่เรียกกันทั่วไปว่า “จอมพล ป. พิบูลสงคราม” หรือ “จอมพล ป.” เป็นนายกรัฐมนตรีที่มีเวลาดำรงตำแหน่งรวมกันมากที่สุดของไทย คือ 14 ปี 11 เดือน 18 วัน รวม 8 สมัย มีนโยบายที่สำคัญคือ การมุ่งมั่นพัฒนาประเทศไทยให้มีความเจริญรุ่งเรืองทัดเทียมนานาอารยประเทศ มีการปลุกระดมให้คนไทยรู้สึกรักชาติ โดยออกประกาศสำนักนายกรัฐมนตรีว่าด้วย “รัฐนิยม” หลายอย่าง ซึ่งบางอย่างได้ประกาศเป็นกฎหมายในภายหลัง หลายอย่างกลายเป็นวัฒนธรรมของชาติ เช่น การรำวง ก๋วยเตี๋ยวผัดไทย เป็นผู้เปลี่ยนชื่อ “ประเทศสยาม” เป็น “ประเทศไทย” และเป็นผู้เปลี่ยน “เพลงชาติไทย” มาเป็นเพลงที่ใช้กันอยู่ในปัจจุบัน

จอมพล ป. พิบูลสงคราม มีชื่อเดิมว่า “แปลก ขีตตะสังคะ” เกิดเมื่อวันที่ 14 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2440 ที่จังหวัดนนทบุรี เป็นบุตรของนายขีดและนางสำอางค์ ขีตตะสังคะ บิดาและมารดามีอาชีพชาวสวน ภริยาคือ ท่านผู้หญิงละเอียด พิบูลสงคราม (เดิมนามสกุล “พันธุ์กระวี”)
จอมพลแปลก พิบูลสงคราม เข้าศึกษาขั้นต้นที่โรงเรียนวัดเขมาภิรตาราม จังหวัดนนทบุรี จากนั้นได้เข้าเรียนในโรงเรียนนายร้อยทหารบก กระทั่งสำเร็จการศึกษา เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2459 ขณะอายุ 19 ปี โดยได้รับยศร้อยตรีและเข้าประจำการที่กองพลที่ 7 จังหวัดพิษณุโลก จากนั้นไม่นานได้สอบเข้าโรงเรียนเสนาธิการได้เป็นที่ 1 และเดินทางไปศึกษาต่อที่โรงเรียนเสนาธิการทหารบก ประเทศฝรั่งเศสและโรงเรียนทหารขั้นสูง ประเทศอิตาลี จนสำเร็จการศึกษาและกลับมารับราชการต่อไป กระทั่งได้ยศพันตรี มีบรรดาศักดิ์และราชทินนามที่ “หลวงพิบูลสงคราม”
เมื่อวันที่ 24 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2475 พันตรีหลวงพิบูลสงครามได้เข้าร่วมกับคณะราษฎรในเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครอง โดยได้เป็นกำลังสำคัญในสายทหารและเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2477 ท่านได้เลื่อนยศเป็นพันเอกและดำรงตำแหน่งรองผู้บัญชาการทหารบก
ครั้นเมื่อ วันที่ 16 ธันวาคม พ.ศ. 2481 ท่านได้เข้าดำรงตำแหน่งนายกรัฐมนตรี ต่อจากพันเอกพระยาพหลพลพยุหเสนา โดยการลงมติของสมาชิกสภาผู้แทนราษฎร และในช่วงที่ดำรงตำแหน่งก็ได้เลื่อนยศเป็นพลตรี และเมื่อวันที่ 28 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ. 2484 ภายหลังจากที่กองทัพไทยมีชัยชนะต่ออินโดจีนฝรั่งเศส คณะผู้สำเร็จราชการแทนพระองค์ในพระปรมาภิไธยพระมหากษัตริย์ (พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวอานันทมหิดล) ได้ประกาศพระบรมราชโองการโปรดเกล้าฯ พระราชทานยศจอมพล จอมพลเรือ จอมพลอากาศ แก่พลตรีหลวงพิบูลสงคราม ในเวลาต่อมาเมื่อรัฐบาลจะยกเลิกบรรดาศักดิ์ไทย หลวงพิบูลสงครามในฐานะนายกรัฐมนตรีพร้อมด้วยคณะรัฐมนตรีชุดที่ 9 จึงลาออกจากบรรดาศักดิ์ โดยหลวงพิบูลสงครามเลือกใช้ราชทินนามเป็นนามสกุล ใช้ว่า “จอมพลแปลก พิบูลสงคราม”
จอมพล ป. พิบูลสงคราม มีชื่อจริงว่า “แปลก” เนื่องจากเมื่อแรกเกิดบิดามารดาเห็นว่าหูทั้งสองข้างอยู่ต่ำกว่านัยน์ตา ผิดไปจากบุคคลธรรมดา จึงให้ชื่อว่า “แปลก” เมื่อขึ้นดำรงตำแหน่งสำคัญ ได้ใช้ชื่อว่า ป. ซึ่งเป็นตัวอักษรย่อเฉกเช่นชื่อของบุคคลสำคัญหลายคนทางประเทศแถบตะวันตก
จอมพล ป. เป็นหนึ่งในคณะนายทหารผู้ร่วมก่อการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครองในปี พ.ศ. 2475 โดยเป็นนายทหารปืนใหญ่ รุ่นน้องของพันเอกพระยาพหลพลพยุหเสนา 2 ปี ที่โรงเรียนนายร้อยทหารบกและเป็นสมาชิกคณะราษฎรยุคก่อตั้งซึ่งมีทั้งหมด 7 คน ตั้งแต่ยังศึกษาอยู่ในประเทศฝรั่งเศส โดยถือเป็นผู้นำของคณะทหารบกยศชั้นผู้น้อย ต่อมาหลังการเปลี่ยนแปลงการปกครองแล้ว จอมพล ป. เริ่มมีบทบาทสำคัญมากขึ้นเรื่อยๆ จากเป็นแกนนำในการรัฐประหาร 20 มิถุนายน พ.ศ. 2476 และเป็นผู้บัญชาการกองกำลังผสมในการปราบกบฏบวรเดชเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2476 จนได้รับความไว้วางใจ ให้ดำรงตำแหน่งรัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงกลาโหมและนายกรัฐมนตรีในเวลาต่อมา
