ฟิลิปปินส์เป็นประเทศเกษตรกรรม แต่มีเนื้อที่ที่ใช้ในการเพาะปลูกอยู่อย่างจำกัด จึงทำให้พื้นที่เพาะปลูกส่วนใหญ่อยู่บริเวณที่ราบต่ำและเนินเขาที่ปรับให้เป็นขั้นบันได พืชเศรษฐกิจสำคัญ คือ มะพร้าว อ้อย ป่านอบากา และข้าวเจ้า นอกจากนี้ยังมีแร่ส่งออกที่สำคัญ คือ เหล็กโครไมต์ ทองแดง เงิน

*เมื่อพ.ศ.2064 หลักจากที่เฟอร์ดินานด์ มาเจแลน (Ferdinand Magellan) นักสำรวจชาวโปรตุเกสค้นพบหมู่เกาะฟิลิปปินส์ ทำให้ชาวตะวันตกได้รู้จักหมู่เกาะฟิลิปปินส์

*สเปนพยายามเข้ามาทำให้คนพื้นเมืองหันมานับถือศาสนาคริสต์จนทำให้เกิดความขัดแย้ง และในที่สุดสเปนก็เข้ามายึดครองฟิลิปปินส์ยาวนานกว่า 300 ปี

*ต่อมาเกิดขบวนการเรียกร้องอิสรภาพที่นำโดยโฮเซ รีซัล (Jose Rizal) ปัญญาชนชาวฟิลิปปินส์ ซึ่งก็ได้รับโทษประหารในเวลาต่อมา

*ในพ.ศ.2441 สหรัฐอเมริกาและสเปนเกิดความขัดแย้งกันจนเกิดเป็นสงคราม แล้วสหรัฐอเมริกาก็ได้เข้ามาครอบครองฟิลิปปินส์แทนสเปนนานถึง 14 ปี (ตั้งแต่ช่วง พ.ศ.2442- พ.ศ.2456)

*หลังจากนั้น ก็เกิดสงครามต่อต้านสหรัฐฯ ที่เรียกว่า Philippine American War ก่อนจะได้รับเอกราชอย่างสมบูรณ์ในวันที่ 4 กรกฎาคม พ.ศ.2489
