ประวัติวัดโพธิ์ชัยคำใหญ่ ; สังกัดวัดมหานิกาย

คำขวัญ“ หลักธรรมทรงคุณค่า เพื่อปวงประชาพัฒนาชุมชน”
วัดโพธิ์ชัยคำใหญ่ ตั้งอยู่บ้านคำใหญ่ หมู่ที่ 7(ปัจจุบัน ตั้งอยู่บ้าคำเจริญ หมู่ 2 เลขที่289) ตำบลคำใหญ่ อำเภอห้วยเม็ก จังหวัดกาฬสินธุ์ ตั้งขึ้นเมื่อประมาณ พ.ศ. 2460 ตั้งขึ้นครั้งแรกนั้นอยู่ทางทิศตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ของหมู่บ้าน (ที่ดอนหอ) หนองบ้านเดิม ต่อมาชาวบ้านเห็นว่าที่ตั้งวัดนั้นไม่สมควร ไม่ถูกกับเปิงบ้าน จึงย้ายมาตั้งอยู่ที่ทิศตะวันออกเฉียงเหนือของหมู่บ้าน
ในเนื้อที่ประมาณ 8 ไร่เศษ ต่อมา ชาวบ้านทายกทายิกามีความเห็นตรงกันว่า
เนื้อที่ตั้งวัดนั้นยังคับแคบไปและไม่เหมาะสมเท่าไหร่ เพราะผู้เฒ่าผู้แก่ในสมัยมองการณ์ไกลในการที่จะพัฒนาวัดในอนาคต จึงมีมติที่จะย้ายวัดจากที่เดิมไปตั้งอยู่ที่เหมาะสมและถูกกับเปิงบ้าน เพื่อให้ชาวบ้านอยู่ดีกินดีไม่เดือดร้อน จึงได้ย้ายมาตั้งอยู่ที่ใหม่ซึ่ง อยู่ทางทิศตะวันออกของหมู่บ้านจนถึงปัจจุบัน ซึ่งคนโบราณถือกันว่า การตั้งวัดนั้นต้องตั้งอยู่ทางทิศตะวันออกของหมู่บ้าน หมู่บ้านจึงมีความร่มเย็นเป็นสุข ซึ่งที่ตั้งใหม่นี้ (ปัจจุบัน) มีเนื้อที่ทั้งหมด 17 ไร่ กับอีก 1 งาน . . เหตุที่ได้ชื่อว่า วัดโพธิ์ชัยคำใหญ่ หรือบ้านคำใหญ่ ตามผู้เฒ่าผู้แก่เล่ากันว่า มีต้นโพธิ์ใหญ่อยู่ต้นหนึ่ง และมีน้ำคำไหลออกมารอบหมู่บ้านตลอดฤดู ผู้เฒ่าผู้แก่จึงได้พากันถือเอาเหตุนี้มาตั้งเป็นชื่อบ้านว่าบ้านคำใหญ่ และถือเอาต้นโพธิ์นั้นมาเป็นชื่อวัด เมื่อรวมคำสองคำเข้ากันแล้วจึงเรียกวัดว่า วัดโพธิ์ชัยคำใหญ่ ซึ่งในการตั้งสมัยนั้น บ้านคำใหญ่ขึ้นตำบลอีตื้อ อำเภอยางตลาด จังหวัดกาฬสินธุ์ มีการขยายตัวอย่างรวดเร็ว ทางราชการฝ่ายบ้านเมืองมองเห็นความไม่สะดวกในการปฏิบัติภาระหน้าที่ จึงได้แยกหมู่บ้านต่างๆ พอที่จะตั้งเป็นอำเภอได้ ทางราชการจึงได้แยกมา
