In recent years, prescriptions filled in community pharmacies
have increased dramatically, and so as the workload of community
pharmacists. With increased workload, a person’s work
efficiency is eventually reduced. When an overload, fatigue
pharmacist slows down the dispensing process, not only the
patients will spend more time waiting for their medicine. It also
increases the chance of making wrong prescription, giving
patients wrong medicine that portraits the safety issues.
Our plan was to save time for the pharmacists and to reduce
the mistakes made during the prescription contents keying in
process. The main idea was to use barcode as a communication
tool between doctors and community pharmacists. Because twodimensional
barcode can carry more data than one-dimensional
barcode, we chose two-dimensional QR-code3,4 as the carrying
tool. When doctors in hospitals encode a patient’s prescription
contents while clicking on the print button, QR-code will show
up at the designated area of the prescription sheet. We expected
that the process could be performed in 2-s. In community pharmacies,
pharmacists can use webcam to pick up QR-code, and
then the code contents will automatically transfer into the existing
pharmacy computer system. We expected that the process
