ร้อยโทหญิงปวีณา ทองสุก เกิดที่ อำเภอศีขรภูมิ จังหวัดสุรินทร์ เป็นลูกคนที่ 2 ของนายนิรันดร์-นางสุกรี ทองสุก จบการศึกษาชั้นประถมศึกษา จากโรงเรียนบ้านสว่าง ระดับมัธยมศึกษาตอนต้น ที่โรงเรียนศรีขรภูมิ จังหวัดสุรินทร์ และมัธยมศึกษาตอนปลาย จากโรงเรียนเทพลีลา บางกะปิ กรุงเทพฯ ได้รับการชักชวนให้มาเล่นกีฬายกน้ำหนัก ขณะยังเรียนอยู่ชั้น ม.2 โดยมี อาจารย์วินัย คำจีนศรี เป็นผู้ฝึกสอน เข้าแข่งขันระดับนานาชาติครั้งแรก ในเอเชียนเกมส์ 1998 ที่กรุงเทพมหานคร แต่ไม่ได้รับเหรียญรางวัล.

นางสาวปวีณา ได้รับเลือกจากสหพันธ์ยกน้ำหนักนานาชาติให้เป็นนักกีฬายกน้ำหนักหญิงยอดเยี่ยม ของการแข่งขันโอลิมปิกเกมส์ครั้งดังกล่าว นอกจากนี้ มหาวิทยาลัยราชภัฏสุรินทร์ ได้มอบปริญญาวิทยาศาสตรดุษฎีบัณฑิตกิตติมศักดิ์ โปรแกรมวิชาวิทยาศาสตร์การกีฬาให้ ในพิธีมอบปริญญา ประจำปี พ.ศ. 2547
