Males appeared at 73 (90%) of 81 sections throughout the study period. The cumulative number of males per section ranged from 0–41 (mean 6 SD 5 11.1 6 10.4, n 5 81; Fig. 1A). When using themost frequently observed section for each male, males appeared more frequently at oviposition sections (68.4% of 38 males) than nonoviposition sections (x2 5 5.16, df 5 1, P , 0.05).Paired females were found at 27 sections (33.3% of 81), and the number of spawning pairs per oviposition section ranged from 1–5 (mean 6 SD 5 1.9 6 1.1, n 5 27; Fig. 1B).The distribution patterns of males and spawning pairs showed a significant deviation from random toward aggregation(the index of dispersion; Id 5 9.80 and 1.96, respectively, P , 0.001 for both). Thecumulative number of males was significantly correlated with the number of spawning pairsat oviposition sections (rs 5 0.493, P 5 0.0012, n 5 27).
