ชื่อของเกาะหลีเป๊ะ หลีเป๊ะเป็นคำที่เพี้ยนมาจากคำภาษามลายู “นิปิส” แปลว่า “บาง” มีความหมายเหมือนกับแผ่นกระดาษ หรือแบนเรียบ ตามลักษณะเกาะที่แบนๆไม่มีภูเขาสูงเลย ตัวเกาะมีลักษณะคล้ายกับรูปบูมเมอแรง มีทางเดินเชื่อมจากหน้าเกาะไปยังหลังเกาะได้ ระยะทางไม่ไกล และสามารถเดินเที่ยวหาดต่างๆรอบเกาะได้สบายๆ
