วัดพระสิงห์วิหาร เป็นวัดสำคัญในประวัติศาสตร์แห่งแผ่นดินล้านนานับแต่อดีต เป็นพระอารามหลวงชั้นเอก ชนิดวรมหาวิหาร ตั้งอยู่ในบริเวณคูเมืองเชียงใหม่ ถนนสามล้าน ตำบลพระสิงห์ อำเภอเมือง จังหวัดเชียงใหม่ วัดพระสิงห์วรวิหารเป็นวัดสำคัญวัดหนึ่งของเมืองเชียงใหม่ ภายในมีพระสิงห์หรือพระพุทธสิหิงค์ ซึ่งเป็นพระพุทธรูปโบราณศิลปะเชียงแสนโบราณ ปางมารวิชัยขัดสมาธิเพชร หล่อด้วยสำริดหุ้มทอง สูง 79 เซนติเมตร หน้าตักกว้าง 63 เซนติเมตร สร้างขึ้น เมื่อ พ.ศ. 700 และเป็นที่รู้จักกันในชื่อ "เชียงแสนสิงห์หนึ่ง" อีกทั้งเป็นพระพุทธรูปศักดิ์สิทธิ์คู่เมืองเชียงใหม่และแผ่นดินล้านนาประดิษฐานอยู่
ตามประวัติศาสตร์ พญาผายู กษัตริย์เชียงใหม่ราชวงศ์เม็งราย โปรดเกล้าฯ ให้สร้างวัดพระสิงห์วรวิหารขึ้นในปี พ.ศ. 1888 ต่อมาได้อัญเชิญพระพุทธสิหิงค์จากลังกาทวีปมาประดิษฐาน จนกระทั่งเมื่อสมเด็จพระบรมราชาธิราชที่ 1 แห่งกรุงศรีอยุธยาได้กรุงสุโขทัยเป็นเมืองขึ้น จึงได้อัญเชิญพระพุทธสิหิงค์มาประดิษฐานที่กรุงศรีอยุธยา ต่อมาได้มีผู้นำไปไว้ที่เมืองกำแพงเพชรและเชียงราย เมื่อพระเจ้าแสนเมืองมา เจ้านครเชียงใหม่ยกทัพไปตีเมืองเชียงรายได้ จึงได้อัญเชิญพระพุทธสิหิงค์มาประดิษฐานที่เชียงใหม่พร้อมกับพระแก้วมรกต เมื่อสมเด็จพระนารายณ์มหาราชตีเมืองเชียงใหม่ได้เมื่อ พ.ศ. 2205 ได้อัญเชิญพระพุทธสิหิงค์มาประดิษฐานที่วัดพระศรีสรรเพชญ์กรุงศรีอยุธยาเป็นเวลานานถึง 105 ปี
เมื่อเสียกรุงศรีอยุธยาครั้งที่ 2 แก่พม่าใน พ.ศ. 2310 ชาวเชียงใหม่ได้อัญเชิญพระพุทธสิหิงค์กลับไปที่เชียงใหม่ เมื่อมณฑลพายัพได้กลับมาเป็นของไทยในสมัยพระบาทสมเด็จพระพุทธยอดฟ้าจุฬาโลกมหาราช สมเด็จพระบวรราชเจ้ามหาสุรสิงหนาทโปรดให้อัญเชิญลงมายังกรุงเทพมหานครเมื่อปี พ.ศ. 2338 ปัจจุบันพระพุทธสิหิงค์ ประดิษฐานอยู่ ณ พระที่นั่งพุทไธสวรรย์ พระราชวังบวร สถานมงคล ส่วนพระสิงห์ที่ประดิษฐานที่วัดแห่งนี้เป็นพระพุทธรูปจำลอง
