การออกแบบงาน (Work Design)
การออกแบบงาน จะเป็นการกำหนดงานและกลุ่มต่าง ๆ เพื่อทำให้ผู้ปฏิบัติงานมีผลิตภาพและความพึงพอใจเพิ่มขึ้น โดยถือว่าเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของโปรแกรม EI การออกแบบงานมี 3 แนวทางการศึกษา ได้แก่
1. แนวทางการศึกษาด้านวิศวกรรม การออกแบบวิธีนี้เป็นวิธีการที่เก่าแก่ที่สุด ซึ่งขึ้นอยู่กับแนวคิดและวิธีการทางวิศวกรรม การออกแบบงานที่มีประสิทธิภาพมากที่สุดนั้น ต้องกำหนดภารกิจที่ต้องทำ และการกำหนดวิธีการทำงาน และมอบงานให้ปัจเจกบุคคลทำ แนวทางการศึกษาด้านวิศวกรรมได้มีการวิเคราะห์ภารกิจ เพื่อกำหนดระเบียบปฏิบัติต่าง ๆ ดังนั้น ในการออกแบบงานจึงเน้นที่ระดับของความชำนาญเฉพาะด้าน และการกำหนดงานที่เฉพาะเจาะจง โดยที่การออกแบบเช่นนี้จะมีประโยชน์ คือ ผู้ปฏิบัติงานเรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับภารกิจได้เร็ว มีวงจรของงานสั้นผู้ปฏิบัติงานไม่ต้องทุ่มเทมาก และลดต้นทุนค่าใช้จ่าย อย่างไรก็ตาม แนวการศึกษาด้านวิศวกรรมถูกวิจารณ์ว่าเป็นการออกแบบงานโดยไม่คำนึงถึงความต้องการทางสังคมและจิตวิทยา
2. แนวทางการศึกษาด้านการจูงใจ การออกแบบงานเพื่อสร้างแรงจูงใจเป็นการพิจารณาถึงประสิทธิผลของกิจกรรมต่าง ๆ ในองค์การขึ้นอยู่กับความต้องการและความพึงพอใจของสมาชิก โดยให้งานที่ทำนั้นเพิ่มความรับผิดชอบในงาน (job enrichment) ซึ่งจะเน้นให้ผู้ปฏิบัติงานมีอิสรภาพ มีความรับผิดชอบ ทำสิ่งต่าง ๆ เสร็จสิ้นทุกขั้นตอนและได้รับข้อมูลย้อนกลับ
3. แนวทางการศึกษาระบบสังคมเทคนิค
แนวทางการศึกษาระบบสังคมเทคนิค (sociotechnical systems : STS) เป็นแนวการศึกษามุ่งในเรื่องการมีส่วนเกี่ยวข้องของผู้ปฏิบัติงานและเป็นการออกแบบงานด้วย สำหรับทฤษฎี STS มาจากหลักการ 2 ข้อ คือ องค์การหรือหน่วยของงานเป็นระบบของการเชื่อมโยงระหว่างสังคมกับเทคนิค และเป็นระบบเปิดที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับสภาพแวดล้อม ระบบสังคมเทคนิคนั้นจะประกอบด้วยส่วนที่เป็นสังคมและเทคนิค ซึ่งจะก่อให้เกิดผล 2 ด้าน คือ 1. ผลิตภัณฑ์ 2. ผลด้านสังคมและจิตวิทยา ระบบนี้จะเป็นระบบเปิดที่มีความสัมพันธ์กับสภาพแวดล้อม ซึ่งทำให้ได้รับสิ่งนำเข้า ได้แก่ พลังงาน วัตถุดิบ และสารสนเทศ
