ปัจจุบันมีแก้มลิงทั้งขนาดเล็ก และขนาดใหญ่กระจายอยู่ทั่วกรุงเทพมหานคร กว่า 20 จุด ซึ่งส่วนใหญ่เป็นพื้นที่ทางฝั่งธนบุรี เนื่องจากมีคลองจำนวนมาก และระบายน้ำออกทางแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา

ทั้งนี้โครงการแก้มลิงแบ่งเป็น ๒ ส่วนคือ โครงการระบายน้ำในพื้นที่ฝั่งตะวันออกของแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา โดยจะใช้คลองที่ตั้งอยู่ชายทะเลด้านจังหวัดสมุทรปราการ ทำหน้าที่เป็นทางเดินของน้ำ ตั้งแต่จังหวัด สระบุรี พระนครศรีอยุธยา ปทุมธานี นนทบุรี และกรุงเทพมหานคร

ส่วนที่สอง คือคลองในพื้นที่ฝั่งตะวันตกของแม่น้ำเจ้าพระยา ซึ่งจะใช้คลองมหาชัย คลองสนามชัย และแม่น้ำท่าจีน ทำหน้าที่เป็นคลองรับน้ำในพื้นที่ตั้งแต่จังหวัดอ่างทอง อยุธยา ปทุมธานี นครปฐม และกรุงเทพมหานคร แล้วระบายลงสู่ทะเลด้านจังหวัดสมุทรสาคร
