งานวิจัยนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อ ศึกษาผลของดนตรีต่อความเจ็บปวด และการตอบสนอง ทางสรีรวิทยาในเด็กวัยเรียนภายหลังผ่าตัดหัวใจแบบเปิด โดยใช้ทฤษฎีการควบคุมประตู และทฤษฎีควบคุมความเจ็บปวดภายในเป็นกรอบแนวคิดในการศึกษา กลุ่มตัวอย่างเป็นเด็กวัยเรียนอายุ 6-12 ปีภายหลังผ่าตัดหัวใจแบบเปิดเข้ารับการรักษาในหอผู้ป่วยวิกฤตเด็กสถาบันสุขภาพเด็กแห่งชาติมหาราชินีในช่วงเวลา 9 เดือน คัดเลือกกลุ่มตัวอย่างตามคุณสมบัติที่กำหนดไว้ 26 ราย สุ่มกลุ่มตัวอย่างเป็นรายสัปดาห์แบ่งเป็น 2 กลุ่ม คือ กลุ่มควบคุมจะได้รับการพยาบาลตามปกติ 13 ราย และกลุ่มทดลองได้รับดนตรีร่วมกับการพยาบาลตามปกติ 13 ราย เครื่องมือที่ใช้ในการเก็บรวบรวมข้อมูล ได้แก่ แบบบันทึกข้อมูลส่วนบุคคล แบบบันทึกสัญญาณชีพและยาบรรเทาความเจ็บปวด ประเมินความเจ็บปวดโดยใช้แบบประเมินความปวดของโรงพยาบาลเชฟฟิลล์ และการตอบสนองทางสรีรวิทยาวัดโดยเครื่องติดตามสัญญาณชีพ วิเคราะห์ข้อมูลโดยใช้สถิติบรรยาย และศึกษาผลของดนตรี ระยะเวลา และปฏิสัมพันธ์ของกลุ่มและระยะเวลาต่อความเจ็บปวดและการตอบสนองทางสรีรวิทยาระหว่างกลุ่มควบคุมและกลุ่มทดลองด้วยสถิติวิเคราะห์ความแปรปรวนสองทางแบบวัดซ้ำ 1 ปัจจัย และเปรียบเทียบความแตกต่างของการได้รับยาบรรเทาความเจ็บปวด ระหว่าง 2 กลุ่มด้วยการทดสอบสถิติไคสแควร์แบบฟิชเชอร์
