เศรษฐกิจพอเพียง เป็นปรัชญาที่พระบาทสมเด็จพระเจ้าอยู่หัวทรงพระราชทานพระราชดำริชี้แนะแนวทางการดำเนินชีวิตให้แก่พสกนิกรชาวไทยเมื่อปีพ.ศ ๒๕๑๗ นานกว่า ๒๕ ปี ตั้งแต่ก่อนเกิดวิกฤติการณ์ทางเศรษฐกิจ และเมื่อภายหลังได้ทรงเน้นย้ำแนวทางการแก้ไขเพื่อให้รอดพ้นและสามารถดำรงอยู่ได้อย่างมั่นคง และยั่งยืนภายใต้กระแสโลกาภิวัฒน์ และความเปลี่ยนแปลงต่างๆ

“เศรษฐกิจพอเพียง” เป็นปรัชญาชี้ถึงแนวทางการดำรงอยู่และปฏิบัติตนของประชาชนในทุกระดับ ตั้งแต่ระดับครอบครัว ระดับชุมชน จนถึงระดับรัฐทั้งในการพัฒนา และบริหารประเทศให้ดำเนินไปในทางสายกลาง โดยเฉพาะการพัฒนาเศรษฐกิจเพื่อให้ก้าวทันต่อยุคโลกาภิวัฒน์

ความพอเพียง หมายถึง ความพอประมาณ ความมีเหตุผล รวมถึงความจำเป็นที่จะต้องมีระบบภูมิคุ้มกันในตัวที่ดีพอสมควรต่อการมีผลกระทบใดๆ อันเกิดจากการเปลี่ยนแปลงทั้งภายนอกและภายใน ทั้งนี้ จะต้องอาศัยความรอบรู้ ความรอบคอบ และความระมัดระวังอย่างยิ่งในการนำหลักวิชาการต่างๆ มาใช้ในการวางแผนและการดำเนินการทุกขั้นตอน และขณะเดียวกันจะต้องเสริมสร้างพื้นฐานจิตใจของคนในชาติ โดยเฉพาะเจ้าหน้าที่ของรัฐ นักทฤษฏี และนักธุรกิจในทุกระดับ ให้มีสำนึกในคุณธรรม ความซื่อสัตย์สุจริต และให้มีความรอบรู้ที่เหมาะสม ดำเนินชีวิตด้วยความอดทน ความเพียร มีสติปัญญาและความรอบคอบเพื่อให้สมดุล และพร้อมต่อการรองรับการเปลี่ยนแปลงอย่างรวดเร็วและกว้างขวางทั้งด้านวัตถุ สังคม สิ่งแวดล้อม และวัฒนธรรม จากโลกภายนอกได้เป็นอย่างดี
