วัดพระธาตุหริภุญชัยวรมหาวิหาร
สร้างขึ้นในพุทธศตวรรษที่ ๑๗ ในรัชสมัยของพญาอาทิตยราช กษัตริย์แห่งราชวงศ์จามเทวีวงศ์ โดยที่แห่งนี้ เคยเป็นพระราชฐานของพระองค์ซึ่งพระราชทานอุทิศถวายให้เป็นวัดพระธาตุฯ เพื่อเป็นพุทธบูชาหลังจากที่พระบรมสารีริกธาตุได้ปรากฏ ให้พระองค์ได้ทอดพระเนตรในบริเวณดังกล่าว มวลสารผงจากองค์พระบรมธาตุหริภุญชัยใช้ทำพระสมเด็จจิตรลดา
ชื่อของวัดพระธาตุหริภุญชัยมาจากชื่อของเมืองหริภุญชัย  ตามที่พระพุทธองค์ได้ทรงพยากรณ์ไว้เมื่อครั้งเสด็จมาบิณฑบาตในสมัยพระพุทธกาลและได้แวะรับและฉันลูกสมอ  ที่ชาวลั๊วะนำมาถวาย โดยได้ทรงพยากรณ์ไว้ตอนนั้นว่า  สถานที่แห่งจะมีผู้มาสร้างเมืองและตั้งชื่อว่า “หริภุญชัยนคร”  และในกาลต่อมาก็มี ฤาษี  2 องค์  ชื่อว่า วาสุเทพ และ สุกกทันตะ ได้ร่วมกันสร้างเมือง ณ สถานที่แห่งนี้  และให้ชื่อเมืองว่า  หริภุญชัยนคร ในปี พ.ศ. 1204  สมจริงตามคำพยากรณ์ของพระพุทธองค์ทุกประการ 
หริภุญชัยนคร แปลว่าเมืองที่พระพุทธเจ้าเคยเสวยลูกสมอ (หริ แปลว่า สมอ, ภุญชัย แปลว่า เสวย, นคร แปลว่า เมือง)ส่วนพระบรมธาตุนั้น แต่เดิมเก็บรักษาไว้ในกระบอกไม้รวกและใส่ไว้ในโกศแก้วอีกชั้นหนึ่ง  ต่อมากษัตริย์ผู้ครองนครลำพูนทุกพระองค์ก็ได้บูรณะและพัฒนาขึ้นตามลำดับ  โดยเปลี่ยนจากโกศแก้วเป็นโกศทองและเปลี่ยนเป็นมณฑป  ในที่สุดเป็นเจดีย์และมีการขยายขนาดของเจดีย์และมีการขยายขนาดเจดีย์ให้ใหญ่ขึ้นเรื่อย ๆ  จนกระทั่งสูงถึง  25  วาครึ่ง กว้าง 12 วาครึ่ง ดังปรากฏให้เห็นอยู่ทุกวันนี้และเรียกชื่อว่า “วัดพระธาตุหริภุญชัย”
